Tests 2 and 3
Accounting and business comprehension
Many employers seek to establish the extent to which candidates are familiar with key business terms. Such a familiarity is one of the principal competencies assumed in many psychometric tests. Tests of data sufficiency, data interpretation, quantitative reasoning and business judgement contain many questions set in a business situation that require the candidate to demonstrate a command of these terms along with the ability to perform the numerical operations being examined.
The chapter provides the opportunity to establish whether or not you have a sufficient comprehension of business terms and to undertake extensive practice in order to enhance your understanding and become familiar with dealing with these terms out of the context of the material in which they normally appear.
The practice questions have been organized into two tests. The first is concerned with fundamental accountancy terms such as depreciation, balance sheet, profit and loss and so on. These terms are in general usage and a competency in them indicates a relatively complex command of the language of business.
The second test examines a very wide range of general business terms. It consists of over 90 questions so in addition to providing an assessment of your comprehension of the language of commerce it also provides realistic practice of a lengthy, challenging test in which you will have to work quickly and maintain your concentration.
Answers and in many instances explanations are provided on pages 199–209. An interpretation of your score is provided on pages 243–45.
Your command of business terms will improve significantly if you practise at this type of question and take time to review your answers and review the questions you get wrong with the benefit of the explanations given.
It will also greatly help if you regularly spend time reading quality business journals and newspapers.
