Chapter 20

A Sensible Approach to Storms and Crises

In This Chapter

◆ Why stay informed?

◆ Preparedness planning

◆ Emergency and evacuation kits

◆ Community building

◆ Learning basic skills

Let’s be clear: talking about survival doesn’t mean we believe there’ll be a disaster of huge proportions on December 21, 2012. Almost certainly, though, the year 2012 will witness storms or disasters of many kinds—just like every other year does. Somewhere, at some time, there will be problems that will be easier to manage if you’re prepared.

In this book, we’ve discussed different trends that could be leading toward some level of disaster. Humans have created many environmental problems all on our own. Now with the help of a few extreme natural cycles, we may be headed for some larger-scale super-storms or other earth activity. This seems to have been foreseen by the Maya and is now confirmed by science. In this chapter, we’ll discuss some common-sense steps you can take to plan for storms and other disasters. Of course, you can’t plan for everything, but a little preparedness goes a long way.

Stay Informed

Staying informed on all the areas we have covered in Part 4 of this book is a good idea. Before disaster hits, this will keep you ahead of the pack and as things unfold it will allow you to know where resources are and how best to adapt to developments.

Keeping informed ahead of time enables you to budget and plan for any equipment you might need, tells you where to go for emergency help, allows you to store provisions and medical supplies, and allows you to adjust your plans in accordance with the situation and the timeline foreseen. Whether you’re planning for a severe hurricane that’s approaching the local coastline or a tornado outbreak moving into your area, you will need to take precautions. Knowing what to expect and what to do may be the difference between getting hurt and staying safe.

Celestial Connection

Nostradamus admonishes in his quatrains about the end times that people “should be prepared spiritually and intellectually and be more aware of survival abilities.”

What Could Happen in Your Area?

One thing you’ll want to know is what kind of natural disasters are more likely in your area. Obviously you wouldn’t prepare for a blizzard in the tropics or a volcano eruption in Oklahoma. Find out what types of disasters are more likely in your region before you make your personal preparedness plan.

Also, be sure you know what your community’s warning signals are. Some communities have a special sequencing of the fire siren, others use church bells, others have an independent siren system. What does yours sound like and what should you do when you hear it? Your community is probably part of the Emergency Broadcast System so turning on your TV or radio should hook you into emergency information.

You’ll also want to consider the special
