Human Connection to the Cosmos

Humans are part of an interactive galaxy. In Maya-view, you have many connections to the universe through your own body. Areas of your body relate to areas of the galaxy, and at the time of your birth these connections are solidified. The relationship between the galaxy and your body is reflected in the Maya numbering system and the calendars. You’ll learn more about this in Chapter 4. For the Maya, everything was based on relationship.

Suspended by K’ul

In Maya-view, people are directly connected to the heavenly cosmos by the energy running through them. Your fingers, pointing to heaven, connect you to the celestial realms, and your toes on the earth connect you to the underworlds. This creates a flow that runs through your body. In addition to being suspended on k’ul between heaven and Earth, points in your body are associated with different parts of the galaxy. You have thirteen key jointed areas (your neck, two shoulders, two elbows, two wrists, two hips, two knees, and two ankles) that reflect thirteen key points in the galaxy. As above, so below: each is a reflection of the other, and movement in one affects the other. In short, the Maya seemed to understand the concept of a hologram: that all parts of the whole are evident in each part of the whole.

Numbers and Cycles

The relationship between the body and the cosmos is reflected in the Mayan numbering system. The numbering system in modern use is based on units of 10. The Mayan base is units of 20; the number of your fingers and toes. Twenty is also the number of days in the months of the Mayan Long Count Calendar, one of the most important of the Mayan cycles.

Thirteen, the number of your joint areas, is a sacred number also. In the Calendar Round, 13 times 20 is a key time cycle still celebrated today. It becomes very clear that Maya saw everything in terms of numbers and cycles.

Celestial Connection

Chinese medicine believes that humans are suspended between heaven and earth through energy points in the fingers and toes. The points are the starting and ending points of the 12 pairs of meridians, or energy channels in the human body. They are referred to as the “warp” points on the “loom of the universe.” Humans are the tapestry being woven.

Wayebs

Another human connection between the seen and unseen realms is the existence of an entity called a Wayeb (pronounced Why-eb). The Wayeb, or Way, is a spirit companion. Every person, including you, has a personal Wayeb. They are often referred to as spiritual doubles, or co-essences. Yours takes care of your needs on a spiritual level, but it’s not a one-way street. You take care of your Wayeb’s needs on a material level. For example, if you want to understand something about the unseen forces, you might call on your Wayeb for insight. On the other hand, if your Wayeb wants to open a door to let an unseen force act on earth, it might call on you to perform a ritual or open a portal. Each person’s destiny is intertwined with the destiny of their Wayeb. For you to meet your goals and objectives, your Wayeb has to meet its goals and objectives as well. Pretty cool stuff. Spirit companions weren’t limited to humans. Mayan deities had their own Wayebs, too!

A Wayeb, also called a Way, is a spirit companion. Every person has one and as you grow and develop, your spirit companion does, too.

Another way of viewing the Wayeb is as the spiritual counterpart to your self. Not an individual, but your own double in the spirit world.

Material Manifestation

Wayebs usually inhabit the invisible realms, but they can manifest in the material world if needed. They show up in animal-like or human-like form. This is similar to the animal totems of North American tribes. Just like people are not all the same, not all Wayebs have the same amount of k’ul. The most powerful spirit companions were associated with the deities who controlled aspects of the universe. So the sun god, for instance, must have had a pretty strong Wayeb.
