the universe against the same earth cycle. Albert Einstein taught that time is relative. It relates to the speed of movement. So how can we say that time is the same in all parts of the universe?

The Maya knew that time was the connection between objects in space. The scope of the Mayan system is much more universal than ours. Timekeeping is not based on a single orbit, or zenith passage, or constellation. It’s based on synchronized alignments that allow interaction between the parts of the whole. The interactions occur because of relationships rather than closeness in space.

Celestial Connection

Albert Einstein opened our eyes to the relationship between space and time, making time a fourth dimension. His theory of special relativity shows that time is relative. It behaves differently under different conditions. The Lorentz equation demonstrates that as speed increases, length contracts and time expands.

Cycles of the Universe

To see how it all fits together, imagine each of the Mayan calendars as a disc, or sphere, with the size of the circumference representing the length of the cycle. Each disc will be a different size. The disc for the solar year of Venus will be smaller than the disc representing the solar year of Earth. Imagine that each disc has notches, or cogs, along the circumference representing time spans. All of the discs interact with each other, like the gears of a clock, only three dimensionally. All the cycles move in relation to the whole. The precision of the Maya’s astronomy and mathematics was essential to enact this extraordinary dance.

Wheels Within Wheels

The dance of interlocking spheres unveils ever-more complex combinations and extensive cycles. The laws of time and nature reveal themselves as we open our minds to subtle patterns. The greatness of the Mayan system is the ability it has to expand our perception.

The problem with the cogwheel analogy is that it’s easy to start to think of the universe as a machine. This is not what the Maya saw! They saw that each celestial body interacted with the whole and influenced the overall patterns. The universe is not a machine set on a course of action; it lives, responds, and changes.

Grid Work

Let’s look at another aspect of the cogwheel analogy. As you know, the Maya tracked planetary alignments and eclipses. In this analogy, planetary alignments are the points of contact between the interlocking cogwheels. They allow the planets to exchange with each other disregarding distance. What are they exchanging? They’re exchanging the k’ul from Chapter 2—the “vital life force.”

The ancient Maya believed that just as k’ul flowed in the earth, it flowed along pathways through all planets and celestial bodies. You might think of them as intergalactic arteries, allowing the earth and other celestial bodies to exchange essential energy “nutrients.” The Maya interacted with this exchange through the earth’s energy grid.

As you remember from Chapter 2, k’ul lines crisscrossed the earth forming the earth grid. Places where lines of force intersect had more k’ul; like streams crossing and forming a pool. Humans were able to interact with the grid by building temples on these high-energy, or sacred, sites. Celestial bodies interacted with the nodal points on the grid during alignments, increasing the flow of k’ul through the grid lines. At the same time, energy could also flow from the earth to the celestial body, creating an intergalactic exchange.

Celestial Connection

All ancient cultures have a word for vital life force. It’s prana in Sanskrit, ki in Japanese, qi or chi in Chinese, mana in Huna, Odic force in Germanic mysticism, etc. Many cultures believe this vital force runs in channels called meridians in people and ley lines in the earth.

The Mayan system was based on the pulsing of energy through the earth as celestial bodies come into and out of alignment. Because people are connected to the planets through the 13 major joints in their body, the effects of alignments were both planetary and personal. Modern astrologers still believe
