The Complete Idiot's Guide to 2012 - Dr. Synthia Andrews Nd [45]

ends the third/fourth age. Mayan Elder Carlos Barrios relates that the oral tradition of the Maya describe a collision between Venus and another body that knocked Venus out of its orbit, putting it very close to Earth. Venus then tried to “take over the position of the sun” and outshine the sun and moon. In the story, Hunab K’u intervened and put Venus back in its orbit. Is it possible the story relates to actual fact, as so much of the rest of Mayan mythology seems to?

Venus Transits

A Venus transit occurs when Venus passes in front of the sun. Venus transits happen in pairs and are rare events. A Venus transit lasts for six to seven hours. Once a Venus transit occurs, its partner transit occurs eight years later. The most recent pairs of transits occurred in 1518 and 1526, 1631 and 1639, 1761 and 1769, and 1874 and 1882. The first transit of the current pair occurred in 2004. Its upcoming partner will occur on June 6, 2012. It will be visible from Northwestern North America. There won’t be another pair of Venus transits until December 11, 2117, and December 8, 2125.

The Least You Need to Know

◆ The variations of the earth’s orbit create changes in our celestial landscape, creating the ecliptic pathway of the constellations, the changing of the North Star, and the precession of the equinox.

◆ The precession of the equinox represents the 25,630-year Grand Cycle of the Maya.

◆ The Long Count calendar age of 5,126 years is one fifth of the precession cycle. The Mayan ages of creation are linked to the precession of the equinox.

◆ The Milky Way galaxy was known to the Maya as the creator of stars in our galaxy.

◆ Increases in solar sunspots cause increases in weather severity on Earth.

Chapter 7

Alignments of 2012

In This Chapter

◆ What happens on December 21, 2012

◆ Eclipsing the center of the galaxy

◆ Strange events in the black hole of the Milky Way

◆ The importance of the Pleiades

◆ New energy for a new age

Now you’ve met all the players, just what is it they’re supposed to be doing? The astronomical events of 2012 are actually a series of pretty unique and unusual alignments. Each alignment in itself is rare; for all to happen in the same year is exceptional. As anticipated, everything culminates in an alignment on December 21, 2012.

John Major Jenkins, Mayan researcher and author, believes the Mayan specifically created their calendar to end on December 21, 2012, to match this alignment. You can see what the sky will look like in 2012 in the following illustrations. If the Maya geared their calendars to this alignment, then they had an understanding of cycles and time that far exceeds our own. It also means the GMT correlation, which we discussed in Chapter 5, was extremely accurate. What was so important about this alignment that it was coded into calendars, temples, stele’s codices, and myths?

Cosmic Crossroads

Let’s start with the Grand Finale for 2012 and look at what happens on December 21. Our solar system has been passing through the galactic equator. John Major Jenkins claims that the rising of the solstice sun on December 21, 2012, will be in alignment with the center of the Milky Way galaxy, and will in fact eclipse it. An alignment with the center of the Milky Way happens once every precession cycle and can be considered the starting/ending point of the precession. If the Maya knew this, as it seems they did, what significance did it have?

Here are the stars you’ll see from Guatemala at noon local time on December 21, 2012.

Galactic Crossing

The ecliptic is the path traveled by the sun, moon, and planets across the sky (see Chapter 6). The path of the ecliptic crosses the Milky Way, forming the cross of the Sacred Tree. As our solar system passes through the galactic equator during 2012, the cross of the Sacred Tree will be formed across the galactic equator in alignment with the center of the galaxy. What does this mean? The ancient Maya believed the center of the galaxy, birthplace to the stars, was the home of the creator god, Hunab K’u. Hunab
