Earth Changes
The changing of the ages was often the result of natural disasters sent by the gods. Past ages were destroyed by forces such as earthquakes, hurricanes, tsunamis, and volcanoes. The destruction of the current age is said to be by fire. It’s described as stones and fire falling on our heads.
Descriptions could fit massive volcanoes, nuclear bombs, or even asteroids from space. Many people predict Earth changes for this time, as we will see in the next few chapters. But could it equally be the fire of the spirit destroying the strongholds of our ego and materialistic viewpoint?
Cosmic Caution
Many believe the Maya deserted their cities at the end of the classic era because of ecological stress. As populations grew, the environment was overstressed, causing an ecological crash. We are very much facing the same today. The destruction of the rain forest, the melting of the ice caps, weather changes, pollution, and so forth are indicators of global ecological stress. Grave ecological consequences may have to be faced. The katuns forecast drought, famine, and pestilence during this time.
The Return of Kukulkan
As we discussed in Chapter 8, Carl Johan Calleman is pretty convincing that the calendars of the Maya are actually tracking the advance of consciousness. The end of the Long Count raises us to the top platform of the pyramid, coming out of the nine levels of the underworld. Many think the return of Kukulkan is also a metaphor for the raising of consciousness.
Hunbatz Men, a Mayan Elder, says that during this time before 2012 people will come together and the initiates will “return to the sacred land of the Maya to continue the work of the Great Spirit.” As expressed in the Chilam Balam, those who were part of the Maya were told they would return to pass on the prophecy they were receiving. Remember: “My part is to interpret to you, your part, later, as well as my own, is to be born again.”
Spirit Rising
Many people today are noticing changes within themselves. They may feel more synchronicity in their lives, feel attuned to nature and natural cycles, even experience more energy awareness. We will discuss these processes more in Part 6 of this book, but what does it mean?
As the planets are moving toward the alignments of 2012, they are increasing in frequency. The vibration affects everything that resonates with it. People who respond to the frequency feel the effects in their body, mind, and spirit. Their consciousness responds and awareness increases. The result is a greater connection to the spirit behind and within matter.
According to Hunbatz Men, the solar priests of the past are returning. He says they are walking in many ceremonial centers, awakening those who visit. This awakening is part of the impact of the alignments. Hunbatz says, “The Mayan masters will begin to manifest in the trees, in the sun, in the moon and in the stars. They will appear also in homes to inform families that the new time to begin the initiation of cosmic work has commenced. Many will not understand because this will happen when people are asleep.” Pay attention to your dreams, and the time in between wake and sleep; not only your Wayeb but the Mayan masters may be visiting!

Solar priests are the keepers of the spiritual wisdom of the Mayan people. Depicted in different murals as carrying the “Cycles of Time,” it is thought that they awaken people to their energy centers and oversee the transitions of the ages.
A Return to Natural Time
The katuns talk about “tying up,” or ending, the Long Count calendar. They warned of the ending of a significant time cycle and the end of the present age. They also talk about a time when there will be no divisions or periods to time. Some people think this refers to the end of the calendars, possibly indicating
