that may indicate a coming reversal. Over the past 150 years the field has decreased by 10 percent.

Cause of Pole Reversal

It’s not known for sure what causes a pole reversal. Many scientists think it’s a natural part of a dynamic system; after all, the sun reverses polarity every 11 years. Another theory is that the earth’s magnetic field becomes unstable. In the earth, a decline in magnetic field strength creates instability, which may spontaneously flip the poles into the opposite direction. In the case of the sun, magnetic field instability occurs with an increase in magnetic strength from increased sunspot activity.

Another theory is that a pole reversal can be caused by an intense influx of energy from the sun. Enough energy entering the ionosphere of the earth can destabilize the magnetic field, especially if the field is already weak. Archaeoastronomist and astrophysicist Paul LaViolette describes experimentally creating pole reversals in magnets by bombarding the magnets with a lot of strong particles. The increased amount of energy along the magnetic lines has the effect of reversing the fields. The extra-strong sunspot cycle coming up together with the current weakening of the earth’s magnetic field could have some serious effects on earth. LaViolette has written four books and many articles. You can learn more at his website, www.etheric.com.

Codex Cues

The Geomagnetic Polarity Time Scale (GPTS) measures the rate at which reversals

occur. It demonstrates that the rate of reversals varies considerably. It can maintain a single orientation for tens of millions of years, and then start shifting every 50,000 years.

What’s the Result?

We don’t really know what happens in a pole reversal. Will there be major cataclysms? Storms? Tidal waves? Speculation is that the reversal could agitate the molten core of the planet, increasing internal pressures. This might cause movements in the tectonic plates, causing earthquakes and floods. Increased pressure may also set off volcanic activity.

Less dramatic problems can be equally difficult. Interference with animals’ sense of direction can disrupt migration routes of birds and whales as well as activity cycles of bees and other insects. Not only will animals show up in places they’ve never been before, but crop pollination and ecosystem balance will be impacted as well. Our own navigational system will almost certainly be disrupted. Once again satellites, radar, and navigational systems may be knocked out. Obstruction of the electric grid, radio waves, airplanes, cell phones, cars, and national security systems might occur. Daily life as we know it has the potential to be inalterably changed.

The good thing? Evidence supports a slow reversal over a thousand years or more as opposed to the fast reversal suggested for 2012.

Celestial Connection

Recent discoveries by Canadian geologists have confirmed that the position of magnetic north is moving. Magnetic north is always moving a little; however, for the last 400 years, it has stayed within northern Canada. Now the North Pole has moved out of Canada and is heading toward Siberia. According to geologists, the movement of the poles could be related to massive earthquakes. For example, the quake that caused the massive tsunami of December 26, 2004, in Indonesia was powerful enough to alter the shape of Earth and jar the planet into a slightly different axis of rotation. It could be partly responsible for propelling the magnetic North Pole toward Siberia.

Cracks in the Earth’s Magnetic Field

The earth’s magnetic field (magnetosphere) forms a shield around the earth that protects it against harmful solar radiation. Cracks in the field were discovered in 2003 by both NASA and the European Space Agency. The immense cracks can remain open for hours, allowing solar winds to flow into the atmosphere. The largest crack is over the Atlantic Ocean between South Africa and Brazil. It’s known as the South Atlantic Anomaly and is a 100,000-mile crack. Crewmembers in spacecrafts that pass through the crack require
