as meaning the world will end. He claims that, “Other people write the prophecies in the name of the Maya. They say the world will end in December 2012. The Mayan Elders are angry with this. The world will not end; it will be transformed.”

Carlos has said that the date of 2012 has attracted people’s fears and influenced how they see the calendar prophecies. He does, however, acknowledge that the calendars foresee a difficult transition that may involve environmental collapse, war, and earth changes. The difference is that he does not call this the end of the world and it’s not the focus of the calendar; rather, the transformation to come is the focus.

Like José Argüelles, who we talked about in Chapter 12, Carlos seems to agree that 1987 was a turning point and from that date Barrios says, “We have been in a time when the right arm of the materialistic world is disappearing, slowly but inexorably. We are at the cusp of the era when peace begins, and people live in harmony with Mother Earth. We are no longer in the World of the Fourth Sun, but we are not yet in the World of the Fifth Sun. This is the time in-between, the time of transition.”

According to Carlos, the Mayan Day Keepers view the December 21, 2012, date as a rebirth, the start of the World of the Fifth Sun. “It will be the start of a new era resulting from, and signified by, the solar meridian crossing the galactic equator, and the earth aligning itself with the center of the galaxy.” With these words he seems to agree with the research of John Major Jenkins, discussed in Chapter 7. However, the final words are these: “The indigenous have the calendars, and know how to accurately interpret them, not others.”

The Views of Hunbatz Men

We introduced Hunbatz Men, a Mayan Elder, shaman, and Day Keeper, in Chapter 9. He lives in Mérida, Mexico, and is an authority on the history, chronology, and calendars of Mayan civilization. He wrote a book titled Secrets of Mayan Science/Religion (see Resources appendix).

He’s a teacher of traditional Mayan wisdom and has founded a mystery school to lead modern people into cosmic consciousness. Hunbatz leads ceremonies at the sacred sites and teaches Mayan breathing and exercise techniques to help people develop energy awareness. He carries the tradition of the X Wenk’al Mayan ceremonial center from his uncle Don Beto.

Hunbatz teaches about the 2012 prophecies from the place of transformation. He quotes the katun prophecies we discussed in Chapter 9 and talks about the return to the sacred Mayan pyramids of the initiates and masters “to continue the work of the Great Spirit.” In accordance with the katuns he claims people will be drawn to the sites to reawaken their spiritual awareness.

He looks to the illumination and wisdom of the Maya to light the way into the New Age. Do you remember the mural at San Bartolo, mentioned in Chapter 8? The final fifth age shows people of all colors working together. Hunbatz goes on to say, “These masters will come from many places. They will be of many colors.”

You can read a speech from Hunbatz Men titled “Living on the Edge of a New World” at www.labyrinthina.com/mayan.htm.

Hunbatz joins the other Native Elders in honoring the earth and creatures of the earth and in decrying the current environmental situation. More than any of the other Elders, Hunbatz talks of the essence and spirit within matter. His is essentially a spiritual message.

In his speeches and writings, Hunbatz says the roots of the Maya are in the pyramids. He leads ceremonies at sacred sites, which he says “honor the laws of all that is visible and all that is invisible.” These ceremonies are used to awaken people to their own sacred centers (see Chapters 22 and 23).

Celestial Connection

The land of the Maya holds many mysteries beyond the pyramids. English explorer Mitchell Hedges discovered an incredible quartz crystal skull in 1924 in a Mayan pyramid at Lubaantun, Belize. According to Hedges
