1. Rinse strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries. Rinse and quarter pears.

Variation: To pulp this recipe in a blender or food processor fitted with a steel blade, remove tops from strawberries, core pears, and cut all ingredients into pieces no larger than 1 inch.

You can use any combination of berries for this recipe, as long as the quantity remains the same. The pear produces a creamy quality in contrast to the vivid flavor of the berries, but choose whatever berries look best in the market.

Juicy Jive

Blackberries and raspberries are the most delicate berries. Not only do they bruise and break easily, but they also mold rapidly once they’ve been bruised. When selecting them at the market, turn the package over. If there’s a lot of color, the berries have been broken.

2 mangoes

¼ lemon

¾ cup sparkling mineral water

2 mango spears for garnish (optional)

Mangoes are actually part of the same family as poison ivy; both contain a chemical substance known as urushiol. When handling a mango, if you find your hands becoming irritated, wear rubber gloves. Some people are more sensitive to the urushiol than others. However, the chemical is only in the skin and not in the fruit, so everyone can eat mangoes.
