Chapter 15

Juices with a Jolt

In This Chapter

• Juices to spike as cocktails

• Juices to blend with wines

• Juices to serve as “mock-tails”

Don’t banish your juicer when you’re entertaining. You won’t believe the difference it makes as you create fresh juices to use as mixers for cocktails. And I give you recipes for these in this chapter. For teenagers and those who choose not to drink alcohol, these recipes also give ways to make your drinks taste like the real thing and still be safe for all to consume.

In addition to cocktails, this chapter contains a number of recipes for wine punches made with fresh fruits. You can serve any of these as a punch for a large group.

Nonalcoholic Alternatives

You can achieve the same sense of sophistication of enjoying a cocktail without adding alcohol to your bloodstream. As vodka has virtually no taste, just don’t add it to any recipe. For rum, the other liquor specified in many of these recipes, a dash of rum extract adds a flavor that is similar.

With wines it’s even easier to omit the alcohol. Many options are available for nonalcoholic wines, some of which are produced by famous wineries and have a delicious flavor. They’re made from the same grape varietals used for the “hard stuff” and with a similar process as wine with one big difference—no alcohol is added for fermentation.

Another alternative is to use sparkling apple cider in place of nonalcoholic wine. Cider will add an additional layer of fruity taste to any recipe.
