8 I expect that some readers would prefer that this book end with a precise prescription for the steps we must take to rid our society of fear. But if the culture of fear operates anything like the way I suggest, a twelve-step program is not what is needed. Rather, on a persistent and widespread basis, we must resist the methods that fear mongers employ and spend our collective wealth on the abatement of genuine rather than fanciful dangers.
