The Herbal Medicine-Maker's Handbook_ A Home Manual - James Green [168]

The taproot of the mojo tradition reaches back to the ancestral herbalists and ancient plant lore of the African continent. Transplants of this knowing appeared in this country in the West Indies and the deep South well over two hundred years ago. That is what I was told.

Once the appropriate wild plants have been approached and communed with, their roots are dug, carefully washed, dried, anointed with herbal oils, and placed in a small handmade red pouch, never to be seen again by anyone other than the carrier, the creator and possessor of that particular mojo.

With continual awareness and appreciation of their presence the visions of the roots’ meaning and purpose are internalized by the carrier like the subtle vibrations of a powerful mantra consciously connecting him and her to Source energy. The carrier is self-empowered by the acquisition, preparation, and lifelong companionship of these wild medicine-roots. Magical occurrences are consummated by one’s focus on a clear intention in a personal environment that includes absolute allowing with no resistance or doubt of any sort to detain the flow of the creative, manifesting energy; therefore the vibrations of a personally potentized mojo supports and sustains the ongoing magic and joy of one’s life journey. The mojo assists its carrier to view life positively, to create deliberately, to attract delicious life experiences, to have what she or he truly wants.

The four roots traditionally used to activate a mojo (as this tradition was passed on to me) are:

1. Two (2) Imomoea Purga (Jalap) roots from the Convolvulaceae family. One of these roots having a more lengthy and slender form to energize “Him” (one’s male energy, yang essence), and one shaped more round and circular to draw in “Her” (one’s female energy, yin essence). Him and Her are the “power roots” known as High John the Conqueror. They draw in personal power protection, manifesting the impeccable warrior. This is star energy—the brilliance of the Sun. Both Him and Her are anointed with an oil infusion of Wormwood. Her is further anointed with oil of St. John’s Wort (Hypericum), Him with a female ritual oil (one’s own creation), then both roots are anointed with the carrier’s own saliva (a personal intimate touch).

2. One (1) Bethroot (Trillium erectum) from the Liliaceae family. This root is known as Southern John. Southern John is the “wealth root.” It assists one to develop a sense of personal worthiness bringing wealth of material benefits. One enjoys an endless abundance of friends, health, love, money, wisdom, humor, and joy. This root properly anointed is expansive with the vibrations of Jupiter. Southern John is anointed with oil (infusion) of Wormwood, oil of Mugwort, oil of Hypericum, and oil of Calendula.

3. One (1) Alpinia officinarum (Lesser Galangal or Small Galangal) root from the Zingiberaceae (Ginger) family. This root is called Little John the Conqueror; or sometimes Chewing John. It is the “wit root” which assists one to cut through fear and confusion, giving the power of clear thought, wit, and lucid expression. Properly anointed, it is the penetrating problem solver, active with the vibrations of Mercury. Chewing John is anointed with oil of Wormwood, oil of Hawthorn berry, oil of Mullein blossoms, and oil of Hypericum.

4. Focus clearly and pointedly on your request of the roots as you anoint them with the herbal oils. If any of the roots discussed above are not available to you, you will of course use roots that thrive where you live which you sense to be equally appropriate for preparing your personal mojo. Trust your intuition. Our plant allies live near us. Design and hand-sew the red bag yourself. Make pull strings to close the top, hang beads on them if so inclined, whatever; fashion the mojo to suit your style.

Gather your roots, prepare the herbal oils, select and sew some passionate red material. It takes time to do all this, time in which you are focusing on your strengths, acknowledging your personal beauty, tuning into your joy, your health, your power and worthiness,
