The Midnight Hour - Brenda Jackson [90]

slowly turned around and met Jake Madaris's intense stare. "If someone had placed Diamond's life in danger and there was a way, even a small chance, that you could protect her, even if it meant putting your own life at risk, would you do it?"

"Yes," Jake said, without hesitation. "I would do anything to protect the woman that I love."

Satisfied with Jake's answer, he glanced at the other three men in the room. He knew he could ask Trevor and Ashton the same question about Corinthians and Nettie and he would get the same response. And although Alex might not realize it yet, Drake was pretty sure the man was in love with Christy Madaris, so he felt certain he would get the same response from him as well.

Drake nodded. "And so would 1.1 would do anything to protect the woman that I love."

The Red Hunter smiled as he tracked Sinclair on his computer. Unknowingly, Sinclair had led them straight to Warren and Green's location. This job had been a piece of cake and he couldn't wait to tell Cross.

He pulled out his mobile phone and hit the power button and immediately punched in Cross's number. "Let me talk to Cross," he said to the person who had come on me line.

It seemed like a full ten minutes passed before Cross came to the phone. "I hope you have good news for me, Red Hunter."

"I do. I'll be making the hit tonight."

"Remember, I want them alive! I have my own brand of punishment for them."

Red Hunter couldn't help the icy chill mat shivered down his spine. Solomon Cross was one of the most heartless, ruthless, and cunning men that he knew. His reputation had been well-earned. The man was a sadistic killer. The sooner he was through doing business with Cross the better.

"You'll get them alive. Go ahead and make the necessary flight arrangements. I can transport them so far in my car, then I'll need a plane to get them out of the country."

"And you'll have one."

"And my money?"

Cross smiled. "One of my men will be at the airport. He will pay you off then."

Red Hunter frowned. "That was not our original plan. I was supposed to accompany Warren and Green to South America. I was to be there for the exchange."

There was a moment of silence on the other end of the line. "Very well, then. I was trying to save you an unnecessary trip."

The frown slowly eased from Red Hunter's face. "I don't mind the inconvenience," he said, relaxing again. He had worked too hard for anyone to discover he was a double agent. Casey and Chisholm had promised him a lot of money if he led them straight to Cross and he intended to do just that. Cross, on the other hand, was paying him a lot of cash to deliver Warren and Green to him alive, and he intended to collect on that as well.

"Call me when you have them," Cross said. "I'll give you further instructions at that time."

"Good," Red Hunter said, then hung up the phone.

Cross handed the phone back to Miguel. A smile touched his lips. "Tell Dominic he is to kill Red Hunter as soon as he turns my houseguests over to him. I much prefer him loosing his life in his own country rather than in mine."

CHAPTER 14

"Would you like another piece of pie?"

Shaking her head, Tori took another sip of her milk. "No, but thank you for asking." She knew her response sounded stilted, way too formal for two people who'd spent the better part of the night mating like rabbits. But here they sat, she and Drake, trying to ease the tension between them. She was still upset about his decision to take the antidote.

"I'm surprised we haven't heard from Hawk any more today," she said, putting down her glass. Earlier Hawk had been advised of Drake's decision. In fact, Drake had already been injected. Once Jake Madaris had been certain Drake knew what he was doing, he'd had one of his ranch hands bring over the medication, and once it had been delivered, everyone had waited while Drake had gone into the bathroom to inject himself.

According to Jake, the drug needed to be in the system for at least twelve hours, which meant Drake had a couple of hours to go. The only drawback to that was the uncertainty that
