The Mystery of the Death Trap Mine - M. V. Carey [46]
He probably planned to blast that shaft closed — he wouldn’t want to draw attention to himself by reporting the body. No wonder he was furious when he caught Allie in the Death Trap.
“And since the Death Trap turned out to be such an unusual mine, we have brought you a souvenir of the place.”
Jupiter handed a small stone to the writer, who took it and examined it with interest. “A nugget!” Mr. Sebastian said. “Thank you. I’ll treasure it. Not everyone has a genuine gold nugget with orange blossoms engraved on it.”
“Allie’s got one,” said Pete.
“I’d say she deserves one,” declared Mr. Sebastian.
“I guess so. She’s an okay kid and she’s got good instincts. I mean, she does kind of know about people. But she’s so darned … darned …”
“Energetic?” said Mr. Sebastian.
“You could say that,” Pete agreed. “You could also say she’s about as comfortable to be with as — well, as a sockful of ants!”
