Commons cited here are taken from Hansard, the official parliamentary record. Sir John Colville’s reflections are taken from the speech he gave in Toronto on 26 November 1986 to a joint meeting of the Empire Club of Canada and the Churchill Society for the Advancement of Parliamentary Democracy. All other quotations, unless otherwise indicated in the text, are from the eight main and sixteen document volumes of Winston S. Churchill by Randolph Churchill (1874–1914) and Martin Gilbert (1914–65), and from Martin Gilbert’s single-volume Churchill, A Life.
