When Lyman Frank Baum (1856-1919) was fifteen, his father bought him a printing press, and for most of the rest of his life, he was involved in drama, writing, or journalism. In 1896, Baum completed his first two children’s books. The he decided to collaborate with well-known artist and newspaper cartoonist W. W. Denslow. Their first effort produced the successful Father Goose. Their next book was The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Baum wrote thirteen more Oz books. Baum penned about sixty books for children, including twenty-four stories for girls under the pseudonym Edith Van Dyne.
Regina Barreca, professor of English literature and feminist theory at the University of Connecticut, is an award-winning columnist for the Hartford Courant. She is the author or editor of numerous books, including They Used to Call Me Snow White ... But I Drifted and The Penguin Book of Women’s Humor. She has also regularly published articles in The New York Times, the Chicago Tribune, and dozens of magazines.
