“Maxine Fortenberry’s Broiled Cheese and Chips Sandwich”

Country Crock margarine spread

4 slices white Wonder Bread (in Dallas it would be Mrs. Baird’s)

2 slices of Kraft American Cheese

Lay’s Potato Chips

Preheat broiler on lowest setting. Spread margarine on one side of each bread slice. Place four bread slices buttered side up on an ungreased baking sheet. Place under broiler until golden, about three minutes.

Remove and turn bread slice over and spread margarine on that side, then top each with a cheese slice. Place under broiler until light golden, about three minutes.

Remove from oven, place Lay’s potato chips on top of melted cheese on one bread slice, then top with other slice, cheese side down. Repeat for other sandwich.

Then MASH down with the palm of your hands (breaking all the chips). Serve.

Tribute: Dale Raoul (Maxine Fortenberry)

“Dale is so brilliant. If there were an award for most transformative performance it would go to her. For such a mean close-minded character, she is the most open and caring person.”

— Deborah Ann Woll

There’s plenty in True Blood to make you cringe. Blood, gouged-out hearts . . . feeding those hearts to unsuspecting innocents. Personally though, nothing gets the hair on my neck standing straight as Maxine Fortenberry and her endless string of insults against her son, Hoyt Fortenberry. It was with strange relief that I watched her dancing crassly around her once-pristine kitchen, under Maryann’s influence as most of Bon Temps. I was so happy to see her freed from her strict regimen of domestic perfection, that I thought, naively, it would unleash a litany of love, acceptance, and adoration for her son. Well, there’s always next Christmas, right, Santa? Holy Hannah, if she didn’t become even more venomous and more spiteful.

Some characters you love to hate, whether it’s because they’re so good at being so bad, or because you hope that, deep down, they’re wounded little self-loathing birds with shockingly high levels of bad cholesterol. Dale Raoul, you scare the bejeezus out of me. That can only be the mark of a great performance. But, you, Maxine Fortenberry, you get 10 glass houses out of 10.

Maryann: Come on, Sookie, it’ll be our little secret. What are you?

Sookie: I’m a waitress. What the fuck are you?!

Maryann prepares a sacrifice for her God. Eric meets with Sophie-Anne. Hoyt has had enough of Maxine. And Sam and Bill momentarily put aside their differences.

Did you spot the author? The woman at the bar who said, “Well, I certainly never expected anything like that to happen here!” is none other than Charlaine Harris, author of the Sookie Stackhouse novels. The comment could have been in response to Maryann’s storyline, which is much more minor in the series, surely a surprise to the originator of this character. Expanding the maenad story offered more material, more interpretations on a theme, and certainly made for better use of a large and outstanding cast. After investing an entire season in Maryann’s antics, and genuinely believing that there was no known power that could destroy her, it turns out her death wasn’t that hard to come by, which is a bit of a let-down. We do, however, draw a lot of satisfaction from knowing it’s Sam who looks her in the eye in the moment she realizes there’s no god, her eternity sealed in one crush of her heart. In fact, it’s really quite heartbreaking. It’s not so much about what it took to kill Maryann, but how much it took for Sam to be the one to do it. Like for most true heroes, there’s a risk. Sam’s victory is not so much that the town has been saved, or that he used his gift to
