like a wounded dog. He falls into her arms and she supports the man who has, yet again, foiled her. Must she always be the last to know? Thank goodness, Stephen Moyer embeds such intense honor and loyalty into his performance of Bill, who spent most of this season in a no-win situation, save for his scenes with Deborah Ann Woll as Jessica — Daddy Bill is far more appealing than Vampire Bill and he owns that field. The proposal scene is quicker than we’d expect, but Anna Paquin’s portrayal of Sookie as utterly conflicted is perfect. Everything has been quicker than she’d expected. From the night she met Bill she’s never been without him. Now she’s never without two vampires, Eric much stronger and potent than Bill. She’s a surrogate mother to a newly turned vampire. She has yet to properly mourn her grandmother’s death. And they all have targets on their backs for going up against the Fellowship of the Sun. Not to mention, she has a new power. Before she met Bill, she was just a telepathic waitress who lived with her grandmother, had never had a boyfriend, never had sex, and never swore.

Sookie’s telepathy was a major plot point in season 1. In season 2, her gift seems to come and go, more out of convenience to the writers, who otherwise wouldn’t be able to put her in the same room with anyone. It’s also what drew Bill to her. Without it, she’s no less extraordinary, but she’s not the girl we fell in love with either. There’s also the question of genetics. Maryann can’t possess Sookie but she can possess Jason. We know that Sookie probably received her gift from her grandfather, but the show hasn’t discussed whether Jason has any powers. Is it possible he just hasn’t tapped into his gift?

We know that to drink a vampire’s blood is to get a different part of the vampire each time. Sookie has drunk from Bill several times, and in large volumes, yet she hasn’t had any erotic dreams about him since they started having sex. Now that she’s dreaming about Eric, will the dreams continue so long as they don’t have a sexual relationship? Are these things connected or just the writers ditching one wet dream for another? Sam drank a lot of Bill’s blood. If Bill senses Sam in danger, will he come to his rescue too? And will Bill appear to Sam in his dreams as well?

Queen Sophie-Anne’s scenes with Eric were marginally better than those with Bill. But she still doesn’t possess enough presence to convince us she’s a threat to anyone, let alone Eric. It feels like the writers are still trying him on for size. The monster in him seems to have subsided in favor of Yahtzee. It wasn’t that long ago he was chewing on a man in his basement. Tara has matured, but is now more frightened than ever by the world. Just a taste of her original sarcasm would be a welcome return.

When will True Blood tackle race? Tara hooks up with what appears to be the only other black man in town, someone Lafayette even thought he had a shot at. Now he’s dead. The bulk of the hard drama this year focused around addiction, cannibalism, faith, and enslavement, stories featuring one or all of the African American characters. And the only gay character also happens to be a drug-dealing, gender-bending black man who services closeted men on the down low. For a show that has captured just about every flag, race would be the most relevant and topical taboo Alan Ball could tackle next.

So who kidnapped Bill? Lorena seems like a good suspect. She did say that their paths would cross again, and she’s already taken him hostage at the request of Eric. Now that we know that Eric is working with Sophie-Anne, it wouldn’t be a stretch to suggest that if it is Lorena, she isn’t working alone. We’ll find out in season 3!

Highlight: Bill: “I’m grateful that you would reveal your gift for the sake of the town.” Sam: “It took me this long to realize that you suffer a lot more hiding something than you do if you face up to it.”

Nightcap: The T-shirt Terry Bellefleur wears at Merlotte’s reads: “WARNING: Beaucoup Dien Cai Dau. I suffer from occasional loss of mental stability and become
