such as this rarely do anything to build lasting awareness for a cause or organization, but in this case numbers talked. @SookieBonTemps, the roleplayer account for Sookie Stackhouse, confirmed over 86,000 individual tweets were created in the first four hours, something that caught the attention of HBO, who stepped up to pledge $10,000 to the Red Cross if the players and their followers reached their goal, a seemingly insurmountable feat. “Sookie” said that to do so they had to generate approximately 45,000 “donations” per day. She confirms that not only did they reach their goal, but tripled it as word of mouth for the campaign spread from Twitter to Facebook, resulting in over 1.5 million digital imprints for both HBO and the Red Cross. Further to that, the participating roleplayers took the extra step of crafting individual responses to as many tweeters as possible, in keeping with their appreciation for fan loyalty.

Months after I’d interviewed a number of the roleplayers for my site, I received an excited tweet from a young man who had engaged his first roleplayer and couldn’t believe when he responded. The following day, he wrote again, this time to say that he’d created his own character and had spent the evening tweeting back and forth with the other players. He was beyond jubilation; he said he felt included. During our exchange, another dozen tweeters had already posted in the hope of grabbing the attention of @EricNorthman or @JasonBT. @SookieBonTemps and @ArleneFowler had shown up for their shifts @MerlottesBar, where @LafayetteTB was firing up the grill. It was fast, fun, and sexy. Just another day in the True Blood Twitterverse.

Tweeting with @VampireBill

@BeccaWilcott: Accounts from the night you and Sookie first met at Merlotte’s suggest that you had an almost immediate bond.

@BeccaWilcott: What’s your attraction to Sookie?@VampireBill: *eyes glaze over and tongue darts out to taste my lip* *turns and looks at you with eyes aglow* *a hiss escapes my throat*

@VampireBill: Sookie has re-awakened feelings in me, I never thought to experience again. She brought me my past, present, and future.

@VampireBill: I do believe that is all a gentleman should say on this particular subject. I am sure you understand.

@BeccaWilcott: What’s your relationship to your maker, Lorena?

@BeccaWilcott: What place does she have in the world as you’ve come to know it?

@VampireBill: *spits the word* Lorena. She is my maker and I will not deny the allure and pull of such a force, or what I did while in her thrall.

@VampireBill: I am vampire. The blood lust is strong when one is newly made and I wished to please her.

@VampireBill: In the end, I could not endure the misery and had to be free or put to my final death. A place in my world? No. Never.

@BeccaWilcott: You, in turn, never planned to become a maker. Now, you have Jessica in your charge, a young woman with needs.

@BeccaWilcott: Do you trust Hoyt’s intentions toward her?

@VampireBill: My hesitation was never with the Fortenberry boy, but rather with Jessica being newly made vampire.

@VampireBill: She is not in control of her hunger and urges and will not be, for quite some time.

@BeccaWilcott: As a Sheriff, Eric has more authority than you, yet there’s clear tension between the two of you.

@BeccaWilcott: Now that he can boast that he’s in Sookie’s blood, are there “bad things” you’d like to do to Eric?

@VampireBill: I am honor-bound to him as a vampire in his Area. He is my Sheriff and I am in his debt for helping to save Sookie.

@VampireBill: Are there bad things I would like to do to him? *smirks* *lengthy pause*

@BeccaWilcott: Do you think Sookie’s brother, Jason, is a help or a hindrance in the fight against the Fellowship of the Sun?

@BeccaWilcott: For instance, if you were to think back to the Civil War, would you have wanted Jason by your side in battle?

@VampireBill: I believe Jason did, indeed, prove helpful in the church. I find him mentally deficient.

@VampireBill:
