Truly, Madly, Deadly_ The Unofficial True Blood Companion - Becca Wilcott [73]
An Exclusive Interview with True Blood ’s Kristin Bauer (Pam Ravenscroft)
From the moment Pam Ravenscroft greeted Bill and Sookie at the entrance of Fangtasia, I was hooked. Not only was Pam the sexiest bouncer on television, she oozed distaste for Bill’s mainstreaming lifestyle. While I’ve never lacked pride for Bill’s choices, Pam has always been quick to demonstrate what an uncensored vampire lives like. Coupled with fantastic comic timing and the most adorable kinship with Eric this side of Joey Tribbiani and Chandler Bing, Bart Simpson and Millhouse Van Houten, or Paris Hilton and whomever will put up with her, Pam is my gal.
Behind every good character is an even better actor, so Kristin Bauer must be top drawer. After surfing her personal site, I became even more intrigued. A passionate artist, advocate, and romantic partner, acting is a large part of her life, but it’s not all of it. I contacted Kristin, who responded with enthusiasm for this book and the opportunity to connect with her fans.
Tell us a bit about how you come to acting, and what, in particular, you like about working in television?
I started acting just to pay the bills and support my drawing and painting habit. But as time went on, the acting took over. I love all acting really but the fun aspect of TV is the speed of it. I started in live comedy television, and still enjoy a faster pace. That and that I usually get to sleep in my own bed at night as there’s less travel.
It seems like the role was meant for you. Could you see playing anyone else on the show? A surly Tara or exotic Maryann?
I think I’m just Pam. And I really couldn’t see any other character differently now either. Everyone is so good! And meeting Charlaine Harris was so much fun for me! To meet the Pam creator — my maker — was a real treat. It was just a joy.
Well, your scenes with Alexander Skarsgård are among my favorites. Pam really shines in those. I couldn’t see another pairing being as well timed as the two of you, frankly. It’s hard to believe you weren’t cast together.
I guess we’re just that good! I’m kidding! But I am happy that it comes across that way. We have gotten to be friends and I think that helps. Also these casting folks and producers are all visionaries, so maybe they saw something, or maybe it’s a happy accident. Either way, I’m really lucky.
Do you have any interest in the paranormal outside the series?
Oh, yes. I am a sci-fi Trek lover. The paranormal, the spiritual, it thrills me. Life without it would be sadly limited to only what one can prove in a lab and that’s a really banal, neutered, unloving way to view life for me. And, also, just not the whole beautiful story.
And now you’re working with a visionary who sees things that most don’t, Alan Ball. I went into mourning after Six Feet Under wrapped. Were you a fan of his work?
There is a passage in American Beauty that still takes my breath away. “I guess I could be pretty pissed off about what happened to me, but it’s hard to stay mad when there’s so much beauty in the world. Sometimes I feel like I’m seeing it all at once, and it’s too much,
