One thing I didn’t mention in the chapter is that the House Committee on Government Reform actually subpoenaed Terri Schiavo. On March 18, the day the feeding tube was to be removed, subpoenas were issued for Michael Schiavo (who was to bring with him the “nutrition and hydration equipment in working order”), three physicians who had treated Terri, and Terri herself. The subpoenas were eventually quashed on account of ridiculousness.

Leon Fuerth’s New York Times op-ed “Looking for the Next Tsunami” was published on January 7, 2005.
