When Ghosts Speak - Mary Ann Winkowski [24]

havoc in a couple’s relationship. I’d heard enough by the time Dixie had explained that she had followed the husband, Frank, home from a topless bar and that his wife, Candy, was a real piece of work. Did I really want to know that Frank had given Candy a diamond bracelet that she had secretly returned because she didn’t think it had enough stones? And was it really necessary for the ghost to tell me that Candy had gone on a lingerie-shopping spree . . . but Frank wasn’t the one who was going to be surprised by the lacy treats? No, this was definitely a case of my hearing more than I ever cared to know. Unfortunately, this kind of petty gossiping goes on fairly frequently. When I realize there’s a threat of becoming caught up in such a soap opera, I do everything I can to encourage the homeowner to allow me to release the ghost into the Light as quickly as possible, with a minimum of questioning.

Detecting Earthbound Spirits

Many people claim to have various ways of detecting earthbound spirits. For me, it’s easy. I simply see them standing in front of me. And, as I have explained, I can also see them in a specific building if I’m talking to someone in that building by phone. My daughter Tara, who can see and communicate with earthbound spirits just as I can, gets a tremendous headache in their presence, which disappears once she releases them.

I have heard of people who use energy meters and other devices to detect spirits. I don’t understand how they work, or what kind of energy they are meant to detect, but the only experience I have ever had with seeing one operate was inconclusive at best.

I had done a lot of work for a very nice family in the Cleveland area. They first invited me to deal with some ghosts who had bad attitudes and a tendency to bother the family pets. Rick was self-employed as a general contractor, and some of the ghosts had followed him home from various work sites. I cleared their house for them, and we stayed in touch occasionally.

With the real estate market booming, Rick started a new business flipping homes. He’d go into a fringe neighborhood, scoop up a run-down house, renovate it, and sell it for a good profit. Often these houses came with a fairly bad history—they’d been drug dens, for instance, or scenes of violent crimes. Over time, Rick noticed that some were more problematic to work on than others. When he ran into a particularly challenging rehab project, he’d call me in; I’d go clear out whatever unsavory ghosts were hanging around and making the work more challenging.

Now, Rick was a real do-it-yourselfer type of guy. It was his philosophy that he should never pay someone to do anything he could do for himself. And so I wasn’t entirely surprised when he called me one day from a new project and asked if any ghosts were on the site. There were. He told me to skip the details and just come on out.

When I arrived, I let myself in the front door and called out to Rick that I was there. He was working upstairs and said he’d be right down. While I waited for him, I noticed a strange machine that looked sort of like a canister vacuum sitting in the center of one of the rooms. I also noticed three earthbound spirits hanging around in various corners.

Rick came down and went right to the machine. “Check this out,” he said. “I’ve gotten really good at this.”

I had no idea what he was talking about, so I just nodded.

“Tell me how many ghosts are here,” he said. “But don’t give me any other information.”

I told him there were three ghosts in the house.

“Okay,” he said, pressing a button on the machine. “This time I’m going to tell you where they are.”

He began to walk around the room, waving the tube attached to the end of the machine around like a wand. The machine made a low humming noise and sometimes emitted a series of clicks, sort of like a Geiger counter.

I leaned against the door frame, just watching. I’m always open to learning something new. Rick circled the room a couple of times before coming to a stop in front of the fireplace. His machine was clicking like crazy.

“There
