When Ghosts Speak - Mary Ann Winkowski [68]

she had suffered from a dowager’s hump, which had left her stooped and twisted. “But she’s standing perfectly straight and holding the baby now,” he told me.

As we were talking, the baby slowly rotated down and around until he was lying as if cradled in his grandmother’s arms. Now I could see his face and see that he looked like he was still sleeping contentedly. “Thank you,” I said out loud, not knowing if the spirit would hear me. The baby shifted again, and was once more upright, cuddled against his grandmother’s shoulder.

Once I saw that the baby’s spirit was peaceful, I turned my attention back to the father. “You understand that you and your children are dead, right?” I asked.

He told me that he did, but he was worried about his wife.

The paramedics were telling me they were ready to go. I pulled one aside and asked him if he thought the woman was going to make it. I could tell from the look on his face that he didn’t have much hope for her. As the paramedics closed the doors of the ambulance, the ghost of the father grew agitated. “What will happen to her?” he asked me.

I told him I didn’t know. I added that he could leave both babies with his grandmother; she’d take them into the Light. Since I expected that his wife would soon die, too, I suggested he go with her to the hospital. If she died, they could go into the Light together. “You’ll see your grandmother there with the babies,” I reassured him.

In another case, I visited a hospital where a mother and an infant were both on life support. When people are on life support or in a coma, their spirits are still with the bodies. When a person is brain dead, the spirit leaves the body. In this case, the infant didn’t have any brain activity, and the hospital staff were getting ready to disconnect the life support once her father returned to the room.

The woman’s mother (the baby’s grandmother) was the one who had called me and was in the room at the time I arrived. When I saw that the spirit of the infant was again seemingly cradled midair, I immediately asked her whether the child had another grandparent who had died. The woman told me that all of the baby’s immediate family was still living. Again, though, it was clear to me that a spirit I could not see was taking care of the baby. Since it was not the spirit of an immediate family member, I like to think that my grandmother was right—the baby’s guardian angel had arrived to take her into the Light.

Toddlers and Young Children

In more than fifty years, I have encountered only four or five ghosts of children who were under the age of five, and all of them were very articulate. One of the most interesting encounters I have had with a child ghost was with a three-year-old spirit whom I encountered almost by accident.

I had been asked to visit a house by a family who was experiencing some serious problems. The woman who called me sometimes did tarot card readings and, to my surprise, had not taken any steps to protect herself or her family from the spirits who might arrive along with some of her clients. The family also had a teenage daughter with some mental health issues, who had begun complaining about the voices she heard that were planning to “get her.” The family had a terrible time with anything mechanical. Their cars would break down, the furnace in the house seldom worked correctly, and the electrical system was totally unreliable.

When I arrived at the house, I wasn’t all that surprised to discover a powerful negative energy creating a disturbance, but I was a bit startled when I saw a very young girl spirit quietly sitting in the living room. By her clothing, I could tell that she had died quite some time ago, probably in the late 1930s or early 1940s.

I guessed that she was about four years old, but when I asked her how old she was, she held up three fingers. She was incredibly articulate for such a young child and was able to tell me her story pretty clearly. She spoke with an accent that I recognized as German. I asked her how she had come to live in the house. She told me that her mommy and
