talking about evil spirits any more than I like having to encounter them. Thankfully, in all the years that I’ve been dealing with earthbound spirits, I haven’t had to contend with very many of these dark and powerful negative forces. I want to be very clear that the entities I am talking about in this chapter are completely different from the earthbound spirits of normal people who have died. In some of the previous stories in this book, I talked about the earthbound spirits of people who acted in evil ways when they were alive. When these “bad” people—murderers, rapists, pedophiles, or other criminals—die, they are still welcomed into the Light. And when I encounter their earthbound spirits, I still offer them the chance to go into the white Light. As I’ve said before, I do not know what happens to these spirits after they enter the Light. What I do know, however, is that the Light is there for them at the time of death.

I also want to be very clear that when I talk about dark entities or evil spirits in this chapter, I am talking specifically about spirits that are not of the Light. These entities do not come from the Light. In fact, I do not believe that they were ever human. When I encounter these spirits, I do make the Light—mostly for my own protection—but only rarely am I able to send the spirit into it. When I tell a dark spirit to leave, it generally will leave the person or the place where it has been attached, but I don’t always know where it goes. I have come to believe that these dark entities basically recycle through the universe, moving from place to place or person to person as they are summoned or welcomed.

Although the evil spirits, or dark entities, that I am talking about here are energy forms, they are not the same as the negative energy I refer to throughout this book. Simple negative energy can take the form of a curse or of bad thoughts directed with intent at a specific person. Some earthbound spirits contribute to negative energy. Some living people do, too.

The evil spirits I address in this chapter, on the other hand, are specifically used in negative ways—for instance, to give people power when practicing dark arts such as certain forms of black magic or satanism. The people who summon these entities often do so expecting to be endowed with extraordinary powers. Those whom I have met and helped have admitted that they did not understand the full extent of the dangers they were exposing themselves and their loved ones to when they invited these dark entities into their lives.

How Dark Spirits Are Summoned

Any number of rituals can be used to summon spirits. While Ouija boards generally attract the attention of earthbound spirits, they can occasionally invite other entities into a home. I do get a fair number of calls from people who are afraid that they have evil spirits—often they tell me it’s the devil—in their homes. In almost every case, they don’t. These entities require a kind of energy that’s simply not found in a normal home. The people who do have evil spirits in their presence have usually participated in rituals designed specifically to attract them. In a few extremely rare instances, I have worked with individuals who have been unfortunate enough to unknowingly move into a home where the previous occupants had practiced these dark rituals.

One young couple called me after they had moved into their new home. When the wife became pregnant with their first child and they began house-hunting, they had been excited to find the old Mission-style home in a quiet town on the U.S. side of the Mexican border. Unfortunately, their excitement turned to unease after they moved in and began renovating. The house had been empty for several years and needed a lot of cosmetic work. When they took down the wallpaper, they discovered pentagrams drawn on the walls. While working in a crawl space under the house, the husband found a mirror decorated with symbols he didn’t recognize. There was an old Ouija board hung up on the wall inside one of the closets on the second floor.
