and difficult than removing a curse or negative energy. I have been both deeply uncomfortable and physically harmed the few times I have confronted these dark entities. I absolutely do not seek out this kind of work: I prefer to leave it to others who are trained and knowledgeable in dealing with these forces.

The Power of Dark Entities

Dark entities, evil spirits, demons—whatever names they are given—have a lot of power. These are the forces that can move heavy pieces of furniture, tip over bookshelves, and kill or seriously injure pets or small animals. Some folks have told me about glimpsing shadowy black forms drifting through their homes. Others mention the unnerving appearance of blood-red eyes that seem to float in darkness. Still other people have told me of spotting creatures with hooves, horns, or tails, though I myself have never seen any earthbound spirit with these characteristics.

It is worth repeating that these entities seek out extremely negative energy. They are not commonly found in households. Usually they are summoned to be present through dangerous practices and are drawn to negative acts. And when they are present, they are unmistakable.

I visited one house after a woman called me to say she had been frightened by glimpsing red eyes in the darkness of one of her rooms. When I pulled up to the curb, even before I had stepped out of my car I could tell that the energy around the house was not good. I had prepared to encounter something nasty, but still felt uneasy as I moved from room to room watching as the shades or blinds in each window suddenly unrolled. Each room was plunged into darkness as I entered it. I asked the woman if this happened often; she told me with a sigh that she spent most of her day moving from room to room, opening drapes and raising shades, only to have the room sink back into gloom before she even got to the doorway.

I did clear some dark energy from that home. And as always when I work with malevolent spirits, I learned nothing about them. These entities never speak to me. I have tried to communicate with them. I have asked them for their names, the reasons for their deaths, and where their bodies are buried, but I have never received an answer from these dark, human-like forms—just menacing glares.

I’ve come to believe that these entities are not like earthbound spirits, and that I may never be able to communicate with them. Because of my experience in removing curses and other negative energies, I do believe I can send these types of dark entities away from a person or a place. But I will admit that I don’t know where they go when they leave.

Protecting Yourself from Evil Spirits

The best way to protect yourself from dark energy is to prevent such entities from being attracted to you in the first place. Do not dabble in black arts, dark witchcraft, or satanism. Do not play with Ouija boards of any type. Do not perform spells intended to summon a spirit to grant you greater power or wealth or fame.

Some of the techniques I recommend later on in this book for dealing with curses and other negative energies may help weaken the influence of a dark entity that has become attached to you or your home. If you continue to suffer, seek out counseling from a trusted spiritual or religious adviser.

Most important, remember that almost all the ghosts I deal with are the earthbound spirits of distinct individuals. These ghosts behave just as they did when they were alive. They can be annoying, their need for energy can cause problems for you and your family, and they may even be unpleasant. But the evil spirits I have discussed in this chapter do not behave like humans. In my experience, they are darker, less predictable, and more dangerous than even the most intimidating ghost I have ever met.

How People Attract Earthbound Spirits

ONE OF the first questions I hear when I clear a ghost from someone’s home is: “Is it the ghost of my mother/father/close relative?” It might surprise you to learn that most of
