When Ghosts Speak - Mary Ann Winkowski [86]

objects or acts used incorrectly.

What I wish people would understand is that they can easily attract ghosts—and all the problems associated with ghosts—by messing around with metaphysical objects such as Ouija boards, pendulums, or tarot cards. Attempting to practice dark witchcraft or cast spells can draw ghosts. Hosting a séance invites spirits right into your home. Ghosts can be drawn to you if you attempt to enter meditative states for the purpose of communing with spirits. Automatic writing—in which you invite a spirit to move your hand to gain certain information via what you write—is particularly foolish, because it invites spirits into your body and could lead to a possession.

There is absolutely no reason for average people to attempt these methods of contacting spirits. If any spirits urgently need to communicate with you, they will find a way. Spirits who have gone into the Light can communicate via dreams. And if there are earthbound spirits that absolutely need to get your attention, you can believe me that they come up with a way to get it. There is no good reason to choose to share your environment with an earthbound spirit.

I have had people tell me that they invited a spirit into their home to gain some greater psychic connection and higher knowledge of the spirit world. I want to assure you that the spirits who are attracted to people through these methods are almost always earthbound spirits. And because earthbound spirits have not gone into the Light, they don’t know anything more about the lives and powers of the spirit world than they did when they were alive.

I Followed You Home

Even if you haven’t been playing with a Ouija board or dabbling in dark witchcraft, it’s quite possible that you come into contact with earthbound spirits on a regular basis. And it’s further likely that, eventually, you will bring someone home with you. The bottom line is, if you have a high-energy, Type A personality; if you have very high levels of physical energy—if you’re a professional athlete or performer, for instance—or if you work outside the home, especially in a job where you interact with the public, it’s likely only a matter of time until you attract a ghost. Earthbound spirits need energy, so wherever there are people in energized situations, there are ghosts.

Over the years, I’ve noticed that certain kinds of jobs tend to attract ghosts. This list is constantly evolving as I continue to visit new places and add to my own understanding about where earthbound spirits congregate. When I went to California, it made sense to me that I’d encounter ghosts on TV or movie sets. However, my stay in Santa Monica was also the first time I had seen groups of homeless people living on the streets. I suspected that there would be a lot of earthbound spirits hanging around them, but the opposite was true: There were almost no spirits around the homeless. Although I can predict what kinds of situations will most likely attract earthbound spirits, until I have had the opportunity to actually spend time in one, I just don’t know for sure.

Here, then, is my list of the places and professions where earthbound spirits are most likely to be found:

• Emergency rooms, especially in city hospitals. Doctors, nurses, and ambulance attendants are particularly vulnerable to attracting ghosts, although simply sitting in the waiting room can be enough to get you noticed by an earthbound spirit.

• Nursing homes. These spots are particularly crowded with the ghosts of elderly men, probably waiting for their wives to pass. I don’t often see the ghosts of women waiting around for their husbands.

• Bars. The rowdier, the better. Earthbound spirits can thrive on the energy generated in a typical biker bar or “punch palace,” where smashed glasses and overturned tables are barely reason to look up from your drink. Just as in life, the establishment you frequent dictates the type of spirit you may attract. Ghosts passing time in hotel cocktail lounges are usually very different from those hanging out in topless bars.

• Dental offices.
