When Ghosts Speak - Mary Ann Winkowski [92]

a painting at the top of a stairway may not be plainly visible from the bottom of the stairs. You may have trouble seeing a television or computer monitor clearly, and no amount of adjustment can make the picture any sharper. People have told me they have seen flickers of light, moving shadows, or small patches of fog or mist drifting in a room. Sometimes people think they catch a glimpse of a human form or a bright light that looks like a person. Others mention seeing a shimmer in midair, like the disturbance created over asphalt on a hot summer’s day.

Hearing

People living with earthbound spirits often think they hear someone saying their name. This may sound as if someone is calling them from far away—or as if someone’s whispering right into their ear. In most but not all cases, this occurs while the people are sleeping, either at night in the moments just as they are dozing off or, more frequently, in the morning just before they awaken. Instead of being roused by the alarm clock, they will startle awake with their hearts pounding and adrenaline high, prepared to spring out of bed as they listen for another cry. Within a few minutes, it becomes clear that no one cried out; the room and house are peaceful and quiet. While most people dismiss these voices as coming from their dreams, there are others who cannot shake the feeling that someone called their name specifically to awaken them.

Other common phenomena include hearing footsteps in empty hallways or overhead, and hearing banging or pounding on doors or walls. I once did some work for a woman who wanted me to come while her husband wasn’t at home. She didn’t feel she could admit to him that she thought there were ghosts in the house. She was right, though: She had several ghosts of younger kids in her house, so I released them all into the Light and put up the protective quince seeds. As I was heading out the door, one of her older children asked what they should do when the teenage boy ghost came back. I told them that he wouldn’t be able to enter the house, and that might make him angry for a few nights, but eventually he’d give up and go away.

A few days later, the woman took her kids to visit their grandparents for several nights. The husband was in the house alone. Of course, that was the night the teenage ghost decided to come back “home.” Apparently, he spent the night in quite a huff, running around the house and banging on doors and windows, ringing the doorbell, and setting off the outdoor motion-detector lights. After a second night of this kind of noise, the husband called the police. The cops cruised by the house several times a night, but they never saw the neighborhood hooligans the husband was sure were tormenting him.

Each morning, the poor guy would start his day exhausted from the nightly racket. Finally, he couldn’t take it. He called his wife and told her he was worried that he was having serious problems with his hearing—or maybe going crazy. He told her the whole story of the banging on the house.

Guiltily the wife confessed that I had been over to the house and had warned that such a thing might happen. At his wit’s end and willing to try anything to get a good night’s sleep, the husband called me. I spent part of the night sitting in their garage hoping that the ghost would show up. At 12:30 AM he finally arrived and started up with his noisy routine. I’ll admit I got some satisfaction from the look on his face when I emerged from the garage and told him to knock it off. Once I sent him into the Light, it was the end of the banging and doorbell ringing.

Feeling of Touch or Other Contact

Ghosts can pull covers off you when you are in bed. You may feel the sensation of them sitting on the foot or edge of your bed. They can drape their arms around your waist or shoulders. They can play with your ears or pull your hair. Some ghosts will touch or create a breeze on the back of your neck. I have met female ghosts who like to gently scratch men’s backs with their fingernails. This kind of contact usually happens when the ghost has an unusual
