ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

This book is our way of saying that there really is a better way to work, a better way to live. It started in 2001 when we set out to pave a new path for workers everywhere. A spark was ignited at the corporate headquarters of Best Buy with a handful of brave and spirited employees. It took courage, perseverance, and a whole lot of guts to buck the status quo and make a ROWE grow and take hold. We proved people really can be trusted, and that business and people thrive in this new environment. We proved that the old rules and policies are ludicrous. We proved that it no longer makes sense to create fancy flavor-of-the-month programs to make people feel better for a while. We proved that changing the game is the only game. And that the new standard is a ROWE.

So first, to the pioneers at Best Buy who have successfully created the new standard—the blueprint—for ROWE. Your stories are an inspiration to others who want a better life. Your stories prove that ROWE isn’t just a theory, but a reality. Your stories are the motivation for others who want to change the status quo. Thank you for believing in us, and for being a beacon of hope for all workers.

To John Larson and Natalie Burns at Bright House, Inc., who infuse our lives with energy and excitement every day— together, we will rock the world! We’re so thankful that you are part of the journey.

To our writer, Dennis Cass. You got into our heads, found our voice, and made ROWE come to life on the printed page. For this, we will be forever grateful.

To Adrian Zackheim, Adrienne Schultz, Will Weisser, and the team at Portfolio—thank you for taking us on and challenging us along the way. You made it possible for us to tell our story to the world.

To the CultureRx team—thank you for weathering the storm with us and for your determination to help make ROWE the status quo.

Jody’s Special Thanks

To my parents, George and Beverly Hartzell, who instilled in me a spirit of courage and perseverance; who believed that whatever needed to get done could get done; and who believed if anyone could make a splash, I could.

To my husband, David Thompson—who through tears, rants, and raves, stays patiently by my side.

To my children, Elliot and Colin Kohl. Life doesn’t have to be about all work and no play—do what you love. Never settle.

Cali’s Special Thanks

To my parents, Heidi and José Gaibor—you raised me to stand up for what I believe in and to be confident that I would be successful in anything I put my mind to. I learned to dream big from you, and I learned that if something isn’t right, it just takes one voice to start paving a new path.

To my husband and best friend, Marty Ressler—who has seen and listened to every emotion this movement provokes in me, from exasperation to pure joy. Your devotion to me and our family, and my always knowing you’ll have my back, means so much to me.

To my three little munchkins, Trystan, Jackson, and Keaton—who remind me every day that happiness comes from the simplest things. You inspire me to continue fighting the fight so when you grow up, you’ll never know the games that used to make up the world of work.

To my brother, Jesse Gaibor, who has been my friend and supporter in every task I’ve undertaken. Thank you for your advice and your encouragement. I’m lucky to have you in my life.

To my grandfather Bob Hoeppner—you taught me that if I keep trying, I will succeed. I learned my “Don’t give up” lessons from you, and they come in handy quite often!

To the rest of my family—my grandmother, aunts, uncles, cousins, and in-laws. Thank you for your support and encouragement throughout my life. I’m very fortunate to have such a big, loving cheering section!

To my friends—thank you for listening to, and sometimes going through with me, the ups and downs of this chaotic, sometimes frustrating, exhilarating,
