itself is free, and then you would use it instead of iBooks. I'm all for competitiveness in the marketplace, but that will at least make people be able to get it to the device they want in the interim. Keep up the great work!

Yes, right now this is the only way people using those devices can get the current issue. We hope to see subscriptions enabled soon.

Hi everybody and greetings from Mexico City.

Before my rant, I would like to say a couple of things:

1) Great job! Thanks for bringing 2600 to ezine format! Here in Mexico, it was difficult to get the magazine, it was expensive and getting the "newest" issue it was always such a pain in... you know, so when I knew about the

digital subscription I just ran to get mine.

2) Please add a +1 vote on getting older content in ezine format! I'm pretty sure a lot of people will buy it to get the older articles or just for the fun of having both printed and digital editions.

Now to the matter at hand:

I don't think Amazon's Kindle magazine format is going to work. I know it's really convenient just to "publish" the new magazine some day at midnight and everybody will wake up and see their newest issue fresh and ready to be "eaten" by all the fans in the world. Besides this and the smaller "monthly/quarterly" cost, I think this is all the benefit that we as customers can get.

The cons: First, I can't read my 2600 ezine on any other device. Obviously, that's a bummer for everybody out there with iPads, PCs and Smartphones who would like to read their issue without the Kindle. Second, apparently the magazines are maxed at 7 or 8 issues and then they are deleted from my device forever, unless you mark them as "keep this issue," but then you can't move them to any collections and they will stack on the main page. Such a horror...

I think, at least for your international customers, I'm willing to pay the $5.95 USD (which still is cheaper than the printed issue in Mexican pesos) to get my "DRM-free and shareable" 2600 "issue-book" every quarter.

HL

We strongly believe that once you buy an issue, it's yours to do with as you please. We're still a ways from having back issues max out for anyone but we can promise that we won't let anyone lose what they paid for.

I've never read 2600 before, but found it while browsing Amazon's Kindle magazine area. The 14-day trial gave me more than enough time to read through the magazine and decide this is one subscription I want to keep active. I know very little about programming, I can make some simple BASIC programs, but that's about it. Still, some of these articles are tempting me to learn more programming languages and skills. Thanks for a great magazine, I look forward to reading more issues.

We hear this sort of thing all the time and it's great to have found a way to reach people who otherwise might never have even heard of us. This is truly a milestone for the hacker community.

Foreign Payphones

Albania. Seen in the capital city of Tirana, this is the standard model that takes only cards. And yes, “Shqiptar” is an ethonym for the Albanian language. But you knew that. Photo by Kyle Drosdick

Israel. This bright orange and black model can be found in Jerusalem and does not take coins. We firmly believe that colorful payphones brighten everyone’s day. Photo by FA

Iran. Both of these very different models are used in the streets of Tehran. One is old and takes coins, one is newer and takes cards. But they each exist under the exact same style of canopy. There’s probably a lesson in here somewhere. Photos by Venture37
