* A study conducted by the National Opinion Research Center, unlike previous (and subsequent) surveys, used a representative sample of the American population. They found that Americans have considerably less sex than is frequently portrayed by nonrepresentative surveys (such as those conducted by condom companies), which are nonetheless reported as “news” in the daily media. The survey found that one third of adult Americans have sex a few times a year or not at all. This study was conducted from 1987 to 1994 with support from the government in response to scientific groups who could not find reliable information about American sexual practices. * According to Albert Mehrabian in Nonverbal Communication (Chicago: Aldine-Atherton, 1972). Mehrabian is credited with finding that only about 7 percent of the emotional meaning of a message is communicated through explicit verbal channels. About 38 percent is communicated by paralanguage (which is basically vocal intonation). The largest segment by far, 55 percent, comes through nonverbal communication, which includes such things as gesture, posture, and facial expression. During sex, that arena is sharply focused on the act of touching.
