Hale Lani Bed & Breakfast This terrific find offers great value for visitors looking for a stay in a quiet residential area but only a 10-minute drive to the beach, shopping, and dining. The four units (two cottages with their own private hot tubs and two units in the main house) all have private entrances, patio, full kitchens, comfy pillow-top queen-size beds, TV/DVD and stereo, plus complimentary breakfast (hot breakfast, fruit, juice) waiting for you outside your unit (pick it up when you want) every morning, setting this B&B apart from the rest. The units are exquisitely decorated in tropical colors and furniture. The host, Ruth, couldn’t be nicer or more accommodating.

Honua Lani Gardens Honeymooners: Picture your own private cabin away from the crowds, nestled in a tropical garden on a hill overlooking rolling hills and the ocean in the distance. Honua Lani (Gardens of Heaven on Earth) has a very cute honeymoon cottage (one bedroom with full kitchen and a loft and bed upstairs) and a 600-square-foot apartment with small kitchenette in the owner’s redwood and cedar home (but with your own private entrance). You are welcome to pick fruit and vegetables from the lush property. All the comforts you can imagine just a 5-minute drive from the beach, shops, and restaurants.

Hotel Coral Reef This is your chance to stay right on the beach, in a hotel, at modest prices. This small, older hotel faces a grassy lawn, coconut trees, and a white-sand beach. Don’t expect the Hyatt, but at these prices and this location it’s a great way for frugal travelers to enjoy the beach. It offers economical rooms and friendly service in an ideal location, within walking distance of shops, restaurants, golf, and tennis, and just 50 yards away from good swimming and snorkeling. There’s even an 8-mile bike path that starts right on the grounds. A new owner is in the process of renovating the old hotel, bringing it up to the 21st century in both decor and amenities in the rooms (flatscreen TVs, DVDs, and so forth). Of the two wings in the hotel, we prefer the oceanfront one that has big rooms that overlook the beach through sliding-glass lanai doors. Each two-room unit has a separate bedroom and a living room with a sofa bed—perfect for families. Also added are a new fitness center, plus sauna. Coffee and pastries are served in the lobby in the morning.
