Inn Paradise Out in the country, about a 10- to 15-minute drive from the beach, Inn Paradise is a plantation-style building with a wraparound lanai that houses three guest units on 31⁄2 landscaped acres. The units range from the one-room “Prince,” with a tiny kitchenette tucked away in a closet; to the large, two-bedroom “King,” which has a full kitchen. Carefully decorated rooms with sparkling tile floors and a quiet, relaxing ambience come together to make this property a good budget choice. Plus, every guest gets a “welcome basket” with all the makings for your first day’s breakfast. The large deck overlooks the flower-filled grounds and a valley dotted with fruit trees beyond. A bonus is the hot tub for soaking after a long day of sightseeing.

Kakalina’s Bed and Breakfast Nestled in the foothills of Mount Waialeale, about a 10- to 15-minute drive from the beach, is this 3-acre flower farm and bed-and-breakfast. You can just imagine the view: flowers, flowers, and more flowers. Just wandering around the grounds is like being in a botanical garden. The most popular unit is Hale Akahi, a two-room unit located beneath Kathy and Bob Offley’s round home, on the ground floor. You enter through an enclosed wooden porch, which has a spectacular view of the verdant valley; the apartment is decorated in white wicker furniture with brilliant tropical flowers splashing color throughout. The views are breathtaking and the king-size bed is comfortable, but the draw here is the bathroom: A huge, blue-tiled tub, big enough to soak in and surrounded by green plants, makes this unit one of a kind. Also on the property, in a separate house, is Hale Elua, with a full kitchen, and a breakfast nook with a view of the flower gardens, a mountain lake, and the ocean in the distance; a queen-size futon can accommodate extra guests.

Kapaa Sands This boutique establishment (just 24 units) offers older (built in 1973), compact condo units right on the ocean, enveloped in lush, tropical vegetation, with all the comforts of home at bargain prices. Each unit is individually decorated by its owners, but they are all comfortable (some studio units have pull-down beds to take advantage of the living space) and have everything you need for a vacation. The bathrooms tend to be tiny, but the kitchens are roomy enough. Ask for a unit on the ocean; they cost a bit more but are worth it. On-site amenities include a freshwater swimming pool, laundry facilities, maid service, and a very friendly staff happy to advise on where to eat and what to do. There is no air-conditioning in the units, as the tropical breeze generally keeps the units cool. The pool area has high-speed wireless Internet access but not the rooms.
