Aloha Sunrise Inn/Aloha Sunset Inn Hidden on the North Shore are these two unique cottages nestled on a quiet 7-acre farm with horses, fruit trees, native gardens, flowers, and organic vegetables (you are welcome to pick dinner). We highly recommend both of these darling bungalows. Each is fully furnished with hardwood floors, top-of-the-line bedding, tropical island–style decor, complete kitchen, washer/dryer, and everything you can think of to make your stay heavenly (from a great selection of movies to an excellent CD library). It’s close to activities, restaurants, and shopping, yet far enough away to have the peace and quiet of the Hawaii of yesteryear. Hosts Allan and Catherine Rietow, who have lived their entire lives in the islands, can help you plan your stay and give you money-saving tips, and they even hand out complimentary masks, snorkels, boogie boards, and other beach items while pointing you to their favorite beaches. Not appropriate for children.

Hale Ho’o Maha If you are looking for a moderately priced bed-and-breakfast on the North Shore, check out this property. For years, Kirby Guyer and her husband, Toby, ran a spacious four-bedroom, three-bathroom home on 5 acres. Then in 2006 they finished their own custom-designed B&B located on the North Shore in the Hanalei area known as Wainiha. Overlooking the mountains, waterfalls, and pristine Wainiha Bay, the Hawaiian antiques–filled home is just 110 steps to the beach (and a 10-min. drive to golf courses, shops, restaurants, and two riding stables). This spacious five-bedroom/five-bathroom home features an elevator (something you don’t often see on Kauai). Guests are welcome to use the gourmet kitchen, gas barbecue, washer/dryer, refrigerator with ice maker/water, and TV/VCR/DVD in the “great room.” Plus there is complimentary use of the laundry facilities. Use of the boogie boards and snorkel equipment, beach chairs, towels, and coolers is all complimentary. Each of the four guest suites is named for a tropical fruit. All have hardwood floors, large closets, cable TV/DVD, ceiling and auxiliary fans, a telephone, and Wi-Fi. We recommend the Pineapple Room, with its 7-foot round bed (with custom-quilted pineapple spread and matching handmade area rug). This is a true bed-and-breakfast with real breakfasts, ranging from macadamia-nut waffles to pancakes and plenty of sausage or bacon to go with them, plus all the fresh island fruit and homemade granola you can eat. The best part is your hosts, Kirby and Toby, who know Kauai inside and out and can point you in the right direction on what to do, where to go, and how to save money.
