Hanalei Surf Board House Just a block from the beach, these two incredibly decorated studio units are a steal at $195 (book well in advance). Host Simon Potts is a former record company executive from England who claims he’s retired to Hawaii, but he’s the hardest working retired guy I have ever met. One studio is filled with whimsical “cowgirl” decor, and the other in pure Elvis Presley memorabilia. Both units have kitchenettes, comfy beds, water purification systems, 300-channel televisions, free high-speed wireless Internet access, Bose CD players, DVDs, iPod docks, barbecues, and backyard lanais. The whole property is “fenced” with old surfboards that Potts collected from locals. But the best reason to stay here (besides the 2-minute walk to either the beach or downtown Hanalei) is Simon himself; his stories about the record industry will keep you howling with laughter for hours.

Bed, Breakfast & Beach at Hanalei Bay On a quiet street in a residential area just 150 yards from Hanalei Bay lies one of the few bed-and-breakfasts in Hanalei. The three guest rooms in Carolyn Barnes’s three-story house range from a 700-square-foot suite with a 360-degree view to a miniapartment on the ground floor with a kitchenette and an outdoor shower. The location couldn’t be better (some guests don’t even bother to rent a car). It’s a 4-minute walk to Hanalei Bay’s 2-mile-long beach, and a 10-minute walk to the shops and restaurants of Hanalei. For families, Carolyn also has a cozy two-bedroom, one-bathroom house a couple of blocks away.

Hale Luana Located in the rolling hills of Kilauea is this 5-acre property, with two B&B rooms available inside an architect-designed home, as well as a five-bedroom vacation rental. The light and airy rooms have several great conveniences like a microwave, refrigerator, coffeemaker, huge TV/VCR, and ocean views. Breakfast (banana/macadamia nut pancakes, tarragon baked eggs, or pecan waffles) is served outside on the lanai overlooking the 50-foot-long swimming pool. Tropical foliage landscapes the area around the home as well as acres of the working fruit farm (avocado, banana, papaya, and grapefruit). Guests are welcome to the plentiful supply of beach toys (snorkel, masks, fins, boogie boards). Also on the property is a five-bedroom vacation rental, which sleeps 14 for $2,800 a week plus a $250 cleaning fee.
