In the 1970s Pat Wiebe, a local nurse, began purchasing small homes in Flagstaff. Today she rents out eight quaint cottages, most built in the 1920s and '30s (as well as two units resembling contemporary town homes). The cottages, which sleep from two to six people, can make you feel as if you've acquired a new home, where kids are welcome. Wiebe has modernized them somewhat, adding thermostat-controlled fireplaces, televisions, VCRs, and washer/dryers. In every unit you'll find fresh-cut flowers, antiques, cupboards stocked with breakfast foods, and rag dolls from the owner's personal collection.

Hotel Weatherford

23 N. Leroux, Flagstaff, AZ 86001. ☎ 928/ 779-1919. Fax 928/773-8951. www.weather fordhotel.com. 10 units, 3 with shared bathrooms. High season $60–$65 double, $95–$105 suite. AE, DC, DISC, MC, V. Parking behind the hotel.

Constructed in 1898, this hotel in historic downtown Flagstaff has antiques-filled common areas, several delightful bars (including one with a wraparound balcony), and a popular restaurant (reviewed later in this chapter). The guest rooms are varied and eccentric, decorated with eclectic antiques. The two suites have queen beds, sitting areas, and claw-foot tubs. The rest of the rooms have no TVs, no phones, and no amenities but a bedroom set and a heater. The main advantage to this hotel is its lively atmosphere. However, the atmosphere can become a drawback when the hotel bars get too noisy. If you're staying here, rest up in advance, and plan on joining the party.

The Inn at 410 Bed & Breakfast

410 N. Leroux St., Flagstaff, AZ 86001. ☎ 800/774-2008 or 928/774-0088. Fax 928/774-6354. www.inn410.com. 9 units. A/C. $150–$210 double. Rates include full breakfast. MC, V.

Peering into the expertly decorated rooms at this inn is like flipping the pages of House & Garden. Each is daringly different, yet tasteful. Collectively, they make this 1894 home owned by Sally and Howard Krueger one of the most interesting B&Bs anywhere. One room, Monet's Garden, has a private sitting area that opens onto the garden. Our favorite, the Conservatory, has an elegant sitting room with a fireplace; a violin and music stand complement the theme. Up a few steps from the four-poster bed lies a beautifully appointed bathroom. A gourmet Southwestern breakfast, served at your table, includes juice, fresh fruit, a homemade pastry, and a nonmeat entree.

Little America Hotel

2515 E. Butler (off I-40 Exit 198), Flagstaff, AZ. ☎ 800/352-4386 or 928/779-7900. Fax 928/779-7983. www.flagstaff.littleamerica. com. 247 units. Jan–Mar 8 $89–$99 double; Mar 9–Apr and Nov–Dec 24 $99–$109 double; May–Oct and Dec 25–31 $129–$139 double. AE, DC, DISC, MC, V.

Strangely enough, the best-regarded chain-hotel accommodations in Flagstaff adjoin a truck stop. Little America's rooms are enormous—they have sitting areas, dressing areas, dining tables, and oversized tubs. They're well appointed and lavishly decorated in French Colonial style (think Versailles). And they're quiet—especially the ones
