Eating & Drinking
For a drink with a cool view, head to Seepromenade. Maximilianstrasse’s hordes can be avoided in quieter backstreets nearby, where your euro will stretch further.
Alte Post ( 934 60; Fischergasse 3; mains €8.50-19.50) A dark-wood tavern with a cobbled terrace out front. Bring an appetite for soul food like Austrian Tafelspitz (boiled beef) and handmade Maultaschen, washed down with fruity local wines.
Valentin ( 504 3740; In der Grub 28; mains €13.50-26.90; closed Wed) Markus Allgaier uses the freshest local ingredients in Med-style dishes at this sleek vaulted restaurant. Signatures like monkfish medallions with pea-mint puree and lamb with wild-garlic risotto are uniformly delicious.
Weinhaus Frey ( 947 9676; Maximilianstrasse 15; mains €15-32; closed Tue & Dec-Feb) This 500-year-old wine tavern oozes Bavarian charm in its wood-panelled tavern full of cosy nooks. Dirndl-clad waitresses serve up regional wines and fare such as Lake Constance trout. Sit on the terrace when the sun’s out.
Marmor Saal ( 946 484; Maximilienstrasse 16; 9am-2am or 3am; ) The lakefront ‘marble hall’ once welcomed royalty and still has a feel of grandeur with its soaring columns, chandeliers and Biedermeier flourishes. Nowadays it’s a relaxed cafe-bar with occasional live music and a chilled terrace.

Lindau is on the B31 and is connected to Munich by the A96. The precipitous Deutsche Alpenstrasse (German Alpine Rd), which winds giddily eastward to Berchtesgaden, begins here.
Lindau is at the eastern terminus of the Bodensee–Gürtelbahn rail line, which goes along the lake’s north shore via Friedrichshafen (€5.10, 25 minutes) westward to Radolfzell; and the southern terminus of the Südbahn to Ulm (€21.70, 1¾ hours) via Ravensburg (€8.40, 48 minutes).

Getting Around
The island is tiny and ideal for walking.
Buses 1 and 2 link the Hauptbahnhof to the main bus hub, known as ZUP. A single ticket costs €1.90, a 24-hour pass is €5.
To get to the island by car follow the signs to ‘Lindau-Insel’. There’s a large metered car park at the western end of the island, beyond the train tracks, but it may be easier to park on the mainland and either walk or catch a bus over.
Bikes and tandems can be rented at Unger’s Fahrradverleih ( 943 688; Inselgraben 14; per day €6-15; 9am-1pm & 3-6pm Mon-Fri, 9am-1pm Sat & Sun).
