Lahaina Grill ( 667-5117; 127 Lahainaluna Rd; mains $28-45; 6-9:30pm) Beautiful people, beautiful food – this dinner restaurant at the historic Lahaina Inn offers the town’s most sophisticated dining scene. The menu gives fresh local ingredients an innovative twist with dishes like Kona coffee–roasted rack of lamb. Although the food gets rave reviews, seating is limited and service can be rushed, so be prepared to hold on to your plates.

Gerard’s ( 661-8939; 174 Lahainaluna Rd; mains $35-45; 6-9pm) Chef Gerard Reversade takes fresh Lahaina-caught seafood and infuses it with flavors from the French countryside in savory dishes such as Pacific bouillabaisse. Both the island-style French cuisine and the extensive wine lists have earned Gerard’s top-of-the-line accolades. Add a quiet candlelit setting and it all makes for one romantic night out.

DRINKING

Pioneer Inn ( 661-3636; 658 Wharf St; 11am-10pm) You couldn’t be more in the middle of the action than at this century-old landmark overlooking the bustling harbor. It’s all open air, making for great people watching, and the afternoon happy hour (3pm to 6pm) keeps it light on the wallet.

Aloha Mixed Plate ( 661-3322; 1285 Front St; 10:30am-10pm) This peppy beachside shack is the real deal. Let the sea breeze whip through your hair while lingering over a rainbow-hued tropical drink – come between 2pm and 6pm and they’re half price. It really gets atmospheric after sunset, when you can listen to Old Lahaina Luau’s music beating next door.

Cool Cat Café ( 667-0908; Wharf Cinema Center, 658 Front St; 11am-10pm) The cool ’50s decor would make Elvis feel right at home. Whether you’re looking for fountain drinks or hard-hitting cocktails, this breezy open-air spot is an ideal place to whet your whistle as the sun sets over the harbor. Live music nightly.

Lahaina Coolers ( 661-7082; 180 Dickenson St; 8am-2am) An eclectic open-air café, Lahaina Coolers attracts the 30-something crowd who come to mingle, munch pupu and sip wine coolers. As the town’s late-night bar, it’s the place to head after the dance floor has emptied.

Bamboo Sports Bar ( 667-0361; 505 Front St; 11am-2am) True to its motto ‘where locals hang loose,’ this is Lahaina’s version of a Cheers bar. Tourists and locals alike come to watch sports on a big-screen TV, shoot a game of pool and have a few cold ones.

Front Street Grill ( 662-3003; 672 Front St; 10:30am-9:30pm) This balcony bar near the harbor is a hit with the college-age crowd, who beat a path here to listen to live music in the afternoon and down some brews.

ENTERTAINMENT

Front St is where the night scene’s centered. Check the entertainment listings in the free Lahaina News or just stroll the main drag. Nightspots in Lahaina typically don’t charge a cover unless there’s a big-name performer.

Live Music

Lahaina Store Grille & Oyster Bar ( 661-9090; 744 Front St) A hot place to go after dark, this multi-story restaurant and nightclub has live music and DJs nightly, with anything from top 40 to underground.

Moose McGillicuddy’s ( 667-7758; 844 Front St) A hopping bar-cum-restaurant, Moose attracts a party crowd, out to drink and dance till they drop. With two dance floors, it jams with DJs nightly and live music on weekends.

BJ’s ( 661-0700; 730 Front St) This place boasts an ocean view and live music from 7:30pm to 10pm nightly. Incidentally, back in the 1970s this was the legendary Blue Max, where Elton John and Stevie Nicks partied.

Hard Rock Cafe ( 667-7400; Lahaina Center, 900 Front St) There’s not much that’s Hawaiian about this rock-themed chain restaurant, but it does get jiggy with Marty Dread, the island’s best reggae, on Monday from 10pm.

Mulligans at the Wharf ( 661-8881; Wharf Cinema Center, 658 Front St; 11am-midnight) Lahaina’s friendly Irish pub has live music, typically Irish folk or Hawaiian, every night. Want to take the stage yourself? Swing by at 10pm Wednesday when it’s open-mic night.
