The dégustation menu is MOP$1390, but you don’t need to break the bank for its two-course lunch at MOP$280.

Located down the alley just opposite the Pawnshop Museum, this nominally Chinese restaurant serves some traditional Cantonese dishes you can no longer find in other Chinese restaurants. Among the wide range of sumptuous dishes is its signature deep-fried stuffed crab with shrimp.

This restaurant is decked out with an iconic crystal dragon, which some love, but some find gaudy. But its dim sum menu, featuring contemporary Cantonese with a Shanghai twist, is certainly outstanding, and also surprisingly affordable.

Elegantly designed in black, the main dining hall will impress you at first sight with its water-lily pool. Getting a table is next to impossible if you don’t have a reservation. The dim sum menu is not as elaborate as its competitors’, but its solid food quality and the chef’s creativity will win your heart.

Rossio’s spacious dining hall, integrated with waterfalls and granite stones, exudes a soothing ambience. And the open kitchen is made to be photographed. Sunday brunch (11am to 3pm; MOP$380) is an impressive spread of buffet items with a focus on seafood, Indian, Portuguese and Mediterranean cuisines; it comes highly recommended.

Housed in Macau’s most distinguished colonial building, with ceiling fans spinning lazily above, the Military Club is for those who romanticise about days gone by. The food here is much better than it used to be and the place has some excellent Portuguese wines. Be sure to dress smartly.
