Camões is the best place to dine on the Fisherman’s Wharf. The menu features a wide range of bacalhau dishes to suit everybody’s fancy. It also has a kid-friendly menu. Ask for a table on the balcony.

Tucked away in the historical Old Ladies’ House, Locanda’s Italian dishes may not be the best in town, but it has a peerless location that provides an excellent outdoor dining opportunity on its leafy patio. Travellers recommend the pizzas here.

A short stroll southwest of the Leal Senado is this tiny restaurant that has won a well-deserved reputation among the Portuguese community in Macau. Tables are often in short supply, so phone ahead.

This brasserie is just up from the Largo do Senado. The bar area extends its opening hours until 1.30am on Fridays. Upstairs there’s a tiny gallery (tall people mind your heads!) with artwork from local young artists.

Get a table by the window upstairs for a view of the boulevard. This stylish place is beautifully decorated with a Portuguese motif and serves adequate Portuguese dishes on the historic Praia Grande.

This restaurant is renowned for its chef, who once worked for the governors of Macau. Dishes worth trying include the baked duck rice and the rack of lamb with mustard. The giant serradura (MOP$52) is a must.

‘The Sailboat’ is arguably the best casual Portuguese eatery on the peninsula. Try the pork-ear salad and deep-fried bacalhau. It’s also listed in every guide book, so you get lots of tourists.

If you can’t get a table at A Lorcha, this lovely restaurant is a good alternative for both Portuguese and Macanese fare. The juicy African chicken deserves savouring.

The wonderful Macanese chef Henri Wong is the soul of this 34-year-old institution. Mr Wong expertly prepares Macanese specialities like African chicken and Macau sole with a unique recipe. The Sai Van Lake setting is superb.

At least three generations in Macau would have heard about this charming century-old Macanese institution. Try its signature roasted pigeon. The chic Fat Siu Lau 2 ( Map; 2872 2922; Ef Vista Magnifica Ct, Avenida Dr Sun Yat Sen; noon-3pm & 6.30pm-midnight), its first and only branch after a century, has some fusion innovations in its menu.

Portas do Sol is best known for its ever-changing dim sum menu that surprises anew every visit. Make sure you have a reservation if you go on the weekend as it gets pretty full when families get together for dim sum.
