What about the other amateur advisers in your life?

Advisers give advice. Simple enough. Devisers give devices. Simple, too, but scarce.

Boundless (literally, no-boundary) interviewing doesn’t require anything more than the sum of you + tools. If everyone was the same, offerors would be even more confused! Why? Because they don’t know what they want.

If I keep advising you to wear the yellow pumps with your chartreuse hoop skirt, will you do it? No. If your sister-in-law advises you to wear the orange pumps instead, you won’t do that either. You’re confused. A confused mind does nothing. You go barefoot.

So devisers don’t try to change you. (It hasn’t worked since the first egg cracked.) They boost your potency with vitameatavegamins.

Here are some clues about who to avoid like the jungle plague:

Someone who is less happy. Or who doesn’t have what you want. Or who makes less money. Or who doesn’t walk the walk. Or who says and does two different things. Or who lies. Or who breaks his word. Or who disrespects others. Or who can’t do one single thing better than anyone else you know. Or who doesn’t know the facts. Or who has some other agenda.

Does that leave only me? I hope not, but you could do worse.

Before we leave the subject of intervention, we need to address the professional advisers. These are my neighbors here on the bookshelf. Neighbors and friends in many cases.

I’ve read and written more books in the career field than anyone else. Done more and hold more certifications too.

This didn’t increase my knowledge of how to get interviews. But it increased my knowledge of analysis paralysis even more. Accepting wrongheaded advice is far worse than accepting none. It reinforces bad habits and demoralizes by negative results.

Regardless of how much I like them personally, many authors and consultants in the career field are unqualified. Almost none have any business advising anyone about a subject so vital.

How do you know who’s who in the zoo—er—jungle?

This is how:

The next time you’re in a bookstore or library, do this little test. Pick six books from the career section. Most of the books either don’t mention the background of the author or give only a few lines. The others have bios of freelance writers, salespeople, or career counselors. Virtually none have a background of systematically generating interviews for others. Yet they’re instructing interview interns into internment.

I’m a great believer in trial and error. Sometimes thousands of tries and errors. It’s the only way to invent a light bulb. Or to hit a baseball. Or to get an interview.

But you don’t have to do it yourself. You can switch on a light, swing a bat to connect, and get an interview, if you know how.

Getting interviews and instantly morphing them into job offers doesn’t happen unless you use a delivery that registers right then and there. You can only learn this from someone who has actually used the devices he recommends.

So consider the source.

What about making your own tribal trail mix? Pick how to dress from one, what to say from another? Do that with your diet if you must do it at all. You’ll get fat, but you’ll get interviewed.

Do what works. Otherwise you’ll be getting ready to get ready until you get retired.
