You’ve shown creativity, initiative, and guts. Those commodities are in short supply there, regardless of how much the shelves are stocked.

Get your card in her hands and yourself in her head.

You’ll get a very good return call!

Contact a Demonstration Company

You can google product demonstration and the name of the city you want. Then write down the phone number and apply.

A much better way is to simply ask the demonstrator at the place where you’d like to be. Do an instant on him! Ask him to refer you, get his company name, address, phone number, e-mail address, and the name of the hirer. Get the hirer’s contact information too.

Some demonstrators work for these services, others are employees or independent reps with the manufacturers or distributors. The routine is the same.

Call, sign up, and let them know when and where you’d like to be assigned.

Make Up a Flyer

. . . With your name, phone number, and e-mail address prominently displayed.

We wouldn’t want to disturb the retailer.

A one-page, simple advertisement or announcement.

Work with the store and the source (manufacturer, distributor, or representative). Use a product brochure as your guide.

Did I mention with your name, phone number, and e-mail address prominently displayed?

Set an optimum date and time for the demo (worthy offerors are attracted early on weekdays).

Have the store and source send it to their mailing list, post and stack flyers in the store, and generally be sure everyone in sight whoops it up.

Ask for a large banner (bought by the store) outside and posters inside. With your name, phone number, and e-mail address prominently displayed.

When you’re driving to your instants, stop and leave flyers wherever you think offerors will read them.

Cars parked in VIP parking definitely need windshield-washer covers.

Get the Retailer to Arrange for Announcements in Trade and Local Papers

Almost all manufacturers have a cooperative advertising program. If not, suggest a co-op ad with your name, phone number, and e-mail address prominently displayed. They cooperate, you demonstrate—your interviewing self!

Learn as Much as You Can about the Product, Price, and Competition

Ask the store, call the source, and google the product for competitors, ratings, and user comments.

Hold Your Demonstration

. . . Of you! Leave business cards out, pass them out, and instant on anyone you can get alone!

Have a signup sheet with name, affiliation, and contact information.

We call it I.I.-ing!

Demonstrate at Trade Shows

You can have a table or booth at any trade show you like. Just reread Do 31 and Do 54.

Then follow those guidelines.

Interview Insight

The lesson in lifelong learning is to know where the lines are drawn, but know as well that they’re only on one page of a whole book. There’s a library full of learning in Gabby’s instant illustrations.

A fulfilling life is out there beyond the job description.

Do demos right, and offerors will watch you work. They’ll be instantly impressed. And want the demonstrator more than the demonstrated.

Just demonstrate that instant you!

Do 70: Auctioning Yourself Off to the Highest Bidder

Once you’re deluged with instants, offers start.

You get so thrilled with the chase—seeking out the jobjungle jewels—that you don’t think to go back to offerors you turned down. They’re disappointed, so make their day!

If you don’t, you’re missing the dynamic of an auction. It’s fun, makes you feel very wanted, and can increase everything about a new job. Pay, vacation, responsibilities, power. All because the process itself takes on a life of its own. Ebay built an e-empire on that fact. Only we use the phone.
