Which couple has the most romantic story?
Harry/Ginny
It’s obvious from the beginning that Ginny is the Princess to Harry’s Prince Charming after he rescues her from the dragon, that is to say, basilisk, in CoS. Even before that, they meet at King’s Cross Station in SS, which is not only Harry’s heavenly place in DH, but also the place where J.K.R. says on her official site that her own parents met and started their life together. Of course, for most of the series Harry is clueless about birds and bees or Ginny’s shy feelings toward him, expressed by the anonymous valentine that began with the sincere but unflattering “Eyes as green as a fresh pickled toad” [CoS, p. 238].
But Ginny’s affection for Harry is timeless, and after managing to push all other girls out of the way with her Quidditch broom, she finally gets Harry’s attention in HBP. It might have helped that Harry was sniffing Amortentia love potion fumes for half of the book, but whatever—once the sweet scent of honeysuckle wafts his way, he only has green-pickled eyes for Ginny. Their first kiss, or “snog” if you prefer, is in front of the entire Gryffindor Common Room in HBP, and after that, their love knows no bounds. Soon Ginny is so sure of their relationship that she teases other girls about Harry’s macho tattoo of a Hungarian horntail, as if he really has one. When Cho Chang tries to flirt again in DH, Ginny is there to just say a big NO, and since she has the flashing eyes and red hair of Harry’s dreams, he has to obey [DH, p. 585]. After a lonely separation during Voldiewar II, when Harry can only watch Ginny’s name moving around on the Marauder’s Map, they survive to live Happily Ever After with their three adorable little Potters in the Epilogue of DH. What’s more romantic than that?
Ron/Hermione
These two get off to a rocky start, not helped by the fact Ron locked Hermione in the girl’s restroom in SS with a giant mountain troll when they were eleven. But, of course, that’s why, in the long run, their love is the essence of childhood romance. The bickering and shouting is a sign of their own unique chemistry, and it takes them a long time to grow up and solve their problems. Even so, Ron nearly loses his chance when he forgets to invite Hermione to the Yule Ball in GoF. He can’t quite sort out whether his jealousy toward Viktor Krum is about losing the girl or merely Quidditch envy. Even in HBP, when most of the kids are paired off, Ron is still oblivious to Hermione’s feelings, and starts messing around in dark corners with Lavender Brown. How could he be so dense? Sometimes true love takes many detours, as in HBP when Ron chomps down a bunch of Chocolate Cauldrons laced with love potion from Romilda Vane, or in the same book when Hermione goes on a hot revenge date with the hulking Cormac McLaggan.
Their darkest hour together is in DH, when Ron seems to be gone forever, leaving Hermione sobbing in her tent for days. But, Eureka! Ron realizes that Dumbledore’s Deluminator was a heart-light that can lead him back to the one he loves best, and he finds Hermione again. After both of them help Harry save the wizarding world, the lovebirds settle down together to bicker and argue their way through parenthood and whatever else life has to offer. It’s a romantic tale as old as time.
Harry/Hermione
Despite a considerable amount of waffling from the author in the last few books in the series, events in the final book appeared, to the untrained eye, to settle all disputes concerning the romantic loyalties of Harry and Hermione once and for all.
In reality, the evidence so far has been somewhat mixed. Harry and Hermione’s passionate love for each other—platonically disguised for years—has created a series of powerful bonds between them. Those trained in the art of deception will recognize Jo’s blatant decoys in the Epilogue for what they are—pure, unwashed disguise. However, watchful fans see the end-game: Fate will intervene and J.K.R.’s giant smokescreen will be revealed.
