Which character would have the more interesting Pensieve: Dumbledore or Sirius Black?
Once a character dies, so do their memories—with the exception of the ones left behind in a Pensieve. These two late and beloved characters led very interesting lives—whose memories would you rather see?
Sirius Black
It would be hilarious to dive into the Pensieve and see all the pranks the Marauders pulled when they were at Hogwarts. Luckily, you wouldn’t have to worry about Lupin taking a bite out of you. We would likely see memories from the Marauders’ Animagi training and maybe even witness how Padfoot tricked Snape into the tunnel. Sirius might have stored fond memories of him and his best mate, James, flying around on the motorcycle during the summers they spent together. Could we see Sirius’s bachelor pad at last? For that matter, what was it really like at Grimmauld Place when Sirius’s parents and Regulus were still alive? Did Sirius really pin up those pictures of Muggle girls in swimsuits? Glimpsing into the Pensieve of Sirius Black would be rewarding and would answer a lot of questions about a character that departed us far too soon.
Albus Dumbledore
We have a version of Dumbledore’s life story in Rita Skeeter’s horrible book, The Life and Lies of Albus Dumbledore, but peering into his Pensieve would show the real truth. We might discover what really happened when his sister Ariana died and more about why Dumbledore held himself responsible. Maybe we’d see a more graphic account of what really happened between Dumbledore and Grindelwald when they were young. ;) And then there are all the years of his life at Hogwarts, meeting generations of students and teachers, and becoming partners with Nicholas Flamel. Just what are the twelve uses of dragon’s blood anyway? You can learn so much more from a Pensieve than a Chocolate Frog Card.
Verdict
Would it be better to ride down memory lane on the back of a flying motorcycle or to visit Godric’s Hollow when Dumbledore was a boy? Sirius had a great time with the three Marauders, but Dumbledore knew them too, as well as everyone else in the wizarding world for one hundred years. His depth and longevity give him the advantage. Verdict: Dumbledore’s Pensieve would be the most intriguing.
