Cuesta San Blas 541; s/d/tr with breakfast S99/129/165; ) In a characterful old building in a prime location, Amaru can’t be beat. Flowerpots sit outside relatively peaceful rooms, which have windows to let the sunshine in. Some have rocking chairs from which to admire the rooftop view. Those in the outer courtyard are noisier, and those at the back are newer.

Orquídea Real Hostal (in Lima 01-444-3031; www.orquidea.net; Alabado 520; s/d/t with breakfast S99/132/165) Owned by a package-tour company, this efficiently run small guesthouse has rustic rooms with working fireplaces, exposed wooden beams and skyline views over the city. All rooms have cable TV, phones and safes; matrimonial doubles also have king-sized beds.

Hostal Marani (24-9462; www.hostalmarani.com; Carmen Alto 194; s/d/tr/q with breakfast S99/153/186/234) This airy oasis has a light-filled courtyard surrounded by humble rooms that vary in size and shape. A few upstairs have vaulted ceilings, skylights and city views.

Madre Tierra (24-8452; www.hostalmadretierra.com; Atocsaycuchi 647; s & d/tr S135/195, ) Warm and supercozy, with plenty of B&B-style luxury comfort touches, farmhouse-like Madre Tierra is a vine-entwined, slightly claustrophobic little jewel box. Good value for money.

Casa de Campo Hostal (24-4404; www.hotelcasadecampo.com; Tandapata 298; s/d/tr with breakfast S135/165/195; ) After climbing steeply to reach this irresistibly charming hillside inn, you may have to persevere for many more flights of stone steps before reaching your room. But the reward is huge: condor’s-eye views over the city and incredibly romantic rooms, some with wood fireplaces. Highly recommended, especially for honeymooning mountain goats.

Eureka Hostal (23-3505; www.peru-eureka.com; Chihuampata 591; s/d/tr S150/180/250; ) A funky blend of old and new, Eureka’s styley lobby and sun-soaked cafeteria invite further acquaintance. Rooms don’t disappoint, with jolly decor featuring a childlike take on traditional motifs. Orthopedic mattresses and down quilts make them as comfortable as they are cool. Flexible tariffs can make it an even better deal.

Also recommended:

Hostal el Grial (22-3012; www.hotelelgrial.com; Carmen Alto 112; s/d/tr/q S90/135/152/192) In a rickety old wood-floored building; all rooms have orthopedic mattresses and some have views.

TOP END

Hostal Rumi Punku (22-1102; www.rumipunku.com; Choquechaca 339; s/d/tr with breakfast S210/270/345; ) A gem of a place, recognizable by the monumental Inca stonework around the entrance, Rumi Punku (Stone Door) sprawls up and down through a stylish complex of old colonial houses, gardens and terraces. The rooftop terraces and other outdoor areas are utterly charming. Rooms ooze comfort and class, with central heating, wooden floors and European bedding. Sauna and Jacuzzi are available for a minimal charge.

Los Apus Hotel & Mirador (26-4243; www.losapushotel.com; Atocsaycuchi 515; s & d S387; ) Los Apus is a neat, classy little hotel under Swiss management, with an airy courtyard and quality rooms with wooden furnishings. It’s so eye-catching that Peruvian feature films have been shot here. Although the place is overpriced, central heating and direct-dial telephones are welcome luxuries. And when it comes to security, this hotel has no equal, with a high-tech alarm system and an emergency water supply. The rooftop terrace is ideal for meeting other travelers. Expect plenty of ambient noise inside your room, however. A wheelchair-accessible room for travelers
