with electric hot showers and cable TV, are clean and quiet.

Hostal Tumi de Oro (22-7108; fax 23-7767; Prado 1145; s/d/tr S35/55/65) This Spartan place almost has all the midrange goods for a budget price. Rooms have hot showers and there’s a lobby with cable TV.

Hostal Sicán (23-7618; Izaga 356; s/d S40/55) An appealing pick with lots of polished wood and wrought iron creating an illusion of grandeur. The rooms are small, comfortable and cool. All have more wood paneling, as well as some tasteful bits of art and a TV. This great choice also has a laundry service.

Hotel el Sol (23-2120; www.hotelelsoltresestrellas.com; Aguirre 119; s/d S45/63; ) This fastidiously maintained and professionally run deal has tip-top rooms with all the mod cons – a steal at this price. The varied rooms have TV, fans and phones, though we wouldn’t want to be responsible for cleaning the spotless white leather couches downstairs. It’s run by the same owners as Hotel Vicus in Piura.

Hostal la Luna (20-5945; Torres Paz 688; s/d S50/70) The airy rooms here are OK, with some bamboo furniture and lots of hush on tap. The downstairs frontage is easily spotted from the street; look for the glass wall completely covered by indoor plants.

Hotel Santa Victoria (/fax 22-5074; La Florida 586; s/d with breakfast S50/70) Overlooking the leafy Paseo de las Musas, the laid-back Hotel Santa Victoria is a longish walk from the center but is top value. Rooms have fan, cable TV and phone; a restaurant with room service is also available.

Hotel Kalu (22-9293, 22-8767; hotelkalu@hotmail.com; Ruiz 1038; s/d S56/70) Almost boutiquelike, these quarters are dressed with stylish ’80s pizzazz. With dazzling colors, a wall-mounted aquarium and an attentive doorman, it’s a spiffy-looking hotel all-round. Carpeted rooms have fan, cable TV and hot showers, and some have a minifridge.

MIDRANGE

Hotel Paraíso (22-8161, 22-2070; www.hotelesparaiso.com.pe; Ruiz 1064; s/d S65/75; ) Brighter and cheerier than its immediate neighbors, the value equation falls in Hotel Paraíso’s favor. Spotless and modern tiled rooms boast decent furniture, a hot shower and cable TV. Breakfast is available in its cafe. It’s the cheapest of several hotels on this block, but holds its head up in comparisons with any of them.

Hotel América (22-9305, 27-0664; Gonzáles 943; s/d S65/98; ) Part underground beatnik club, part ’70s casino, the América is dark and moody, with lots of velvet, plush carpeting and kitsch gold trimmings (gold deer statues, anyone?). The good-sized rooms are nicely appointed and have fans, cable TV and minifridges.

Hotel Santa Rosa (22-4411, fax 23-6242; Gonzáles 927; s/d with breakfast S70/85) This quiet, clean and pleasant hotel has comfortable rooms with fan, cable TV and phones. The size of the bathrooms varies from unit to unit, so look around. There’s a good restaurant.

Latinos Hostal (23-5437; Igaza 600; s/d S70/100) An excellent choice, this new-looking hotel is thoroughly maintained with perfect little rooms; some of the corner rooms have giant curving floor-to-ceiling windows for great street views and plenty of light. The staff is very helpful.

Hotel las Musas (23-9884-86; nazih@viabpc.com; Faiques 101; s/d with breakfast S105/140; ) Overlooking the peaceful Paseo de las Musas, this hotel has modern, spacious rooms with cable TV, phone and minifridge. There’s a cascading ‘waterfall’ backed by a mossy green wall in the foyer and the bathrooms all have bathtubs as well as showers – a rarity in Peru. Some rooms have good views of the Paseo de las Musas. A restaurant is open 7am to 11pm, and room service is available 24 hours. There is a karaoke-disco, small casino and tourist information, plus tours are available.

TOP END

Gran Hotel Chiclayo (23-4911; www.granhotelchiclayo.com.pe; Villarreal 115; s/d S252/296; ) The top end of Chiclayo living, it’s all superswanky here, with everything you’d expect, including room service, laundry, travel agency, car rental, cappuccino bar, karaoke and casino. Serious-looking businessmen flock here in droves.
