Nam Hai II 40 Ma May 04/3926 1688, www.namhai2hotel.com. The wood panelling, wooden collages and heavy dark-wood furniture may be a bit overbearing, but the well-equipped and well-maintained rooms represent good value for money. US$21–30

Queen Travel 65 Hang Bac 04/3826 0860, www.queencafe.com.vn. In the heart of the Old Quarter, this homely hotel (only nine rooms) stands out for its eye-catching Vietnamese-style entrance hall and for the attention to detail in the guestrooms, not to mention a friendly, family atmosphere. The rooms are decked out in restful creams and beiges offset by the dark wooden floorboards and bamboo furniture, and are equipped with DVD players and free wi-fi. US$31–50

Sunshine 42 Ma May 04/3926 1559, www.hanoisunshinehotel.com. With just eleven rooms and a well-justified reputation for helpful staff and good standards of service, booking ahead is a must at this welcoming hotel at the top end of Ma May. Guestrooms are clean and spacious and come with all the usual mod cons. Tour and travel services and free internet access round out the picture. US$21–30

Thien Trang 24 Nha Chung 04/3826 9823, thientranghotel24@hotmail.com. Prices remain surprisingly affordable at this small and friendly hotel located in the trendy cathedral area. The rooms are nothing fancy, but clean and well kept: those at the cheaper end have no windows, while the top-floor room boasts a private roof terrace and great views over the town. US$11–30

Thu Giang 5a Tam Thuong alley 04/3828 5734, thugiangn@hotmail.com. A family-run hotel with tiny, no-frills rooms from $6: $10 buys you more space, a/c and TV. Not much in the way of facilities but an interesting location and the hosts make you very welcome. US$10 and under

Tien Thuy 9 Hang Thung 04/3934 3608, www.sunshinehotel.com.vn. Well-managed hotel close to Hoan Kiem Lake offering twenty fully equipped if slightly aging rooms at reasonable rates; bathrooms are unusually generous and all fitted with bathtubs. Buffet breakfast included in price. US$21–30

Tung Trang 13 Tam Thuong alley 04/3828 6267, tungtranghotel@yahoo.com. A step above the rest along this alley, the Tung Trang offers more spacious rooms, all with TVs, a/c and en-suite bathrooms. It’s worth paying a couple of dollars extra for a bigger room with a window. US$11–20

Win 34 Hang Hanh 04/3828 7371, winhotel@yahoo.com. Perennially popular, friendly hotel on the ultra-cool Hang Hanh café strip. While the ten rooms are kitted out with all the usual amenities (a/c, satellite TV, fridges, phones and so forth) and well maintained, they’re looking a little worn considering the price tag. US$11–20

The French Quarter

The following are all marked on the Central Hanoi map "Central Hanoi", unless otherwise stated.

Army 33c Pham Ngu Lao 04/3825 2896, armyhotel@fpt.vn. See map "Hanoi". This mid-range hotel set among trees on a quiet backstreet next to the Ministry of Defence offers reasonable value for such a central location. Spacious if somewhat old-fashioned rooms occupy low-rise blocks around a large, salt-water swimming pool. US$76–150

Artist 22a Hai Ba Trung 04/3825 3044, artist_hotel@yahoo.com. One of the few cheap options in the French Quarter, this old hotel is recommended for its lovely location around a tree-filled courtyard at the end of a long alley: the rooms, however, aren’t super clean. US$21–30

De Syloia 17a Tran Hung Dao 04/3824 5346, www.desyloia.com. A stylish, boutique business hotel with just 33 impeccably furnished rooms, some a touch on the small side, behind its mock-colonial facade. Service is good and it also boasts a decent restaurant. US$151 and over
