in Vietnam depends very much on their sex, and on their age and social standing, relative to your own. As a general rule of thumb, if you address a man as ông, and a woman as bà, you can be sure you aren’t being impolite. If you find yourself in conversation, either formally or informally, with someone of your approximate age, you can use anh (for a man) and chi (for a woman). You can also use the same formula to address someone when you know their name. Vietnamese names are traditionally written with the family name first (Nguyen, Tran, Le and Pham are among the most common) and the given name last and between them a qualifying name, which often indicates a person’s sex or the particular branch of the family to which they belong. People are usually referred to by their given name so, for example, you would address an older man called Nguyen Van Hai as Ong Hai.
