Wake-Up Smoothie
Skip the cup of coffee, and get your energy from a nutrient-rich morning shake. It’s also a great snack after working out. Wheat germ packs a punch with folic acid, iron, and zinc, while the flaxseeds provide the omega-3 fatty acids.
MAKES 2 SERVINGS
1 (6-ounce/170 g) container vanilla soy yogurt
½ cup (120 ml) chilled orange juice
½ cup (80 g) frozen blueberries
1 banana, sliced
2 tablespoons wheat germ
1 tablespoon flaxseed oil or ground flaxseeds
Put all of the ingredients in a blender and blend until well combined. Serve immediately.

The Nutty Monkey is similar to a breakfast sandwich I get at a little café in Venice Beach, but the world has enough breakfast sandwiches. I decided to make it into a smoothie! It’s the adult version of a PB&J. Enjoy.

1 cup (240 ml) almond milk
1 frozen banana, cut into chunks
¼ cup (65 g) organic creamy peanut butter
2 tablespoons whole, raw almonds
1 teaspoon wheat germ
2 tablespoons all-natural strawberry jam
Put all of the ingredients in a blender and blend until well combined. Serve immediately.

¼ cup (60 ml) peach-coconut yogurt
2 peaches, peeled and sliced
1 tablespoon flaxseed oil
Ground nutmeg, to taste

1 Fuji apple
½ cucumber
2 celery stalks
1 large lemon
Handful of cherries, pitted
1 teaspoon fresh ginger, sliced

Toast, ladies. This refreshing red sangria is full of all the right stuff. Heart-healthy resveratrol in red wine, the one- two punch of açai and pomegranate in potent antioxidants, and plenty of vitamins and minerals from fresh, seasonal fruit. Okay, just one glass.
MAKES 2 SERVINGS
3 watermelon chunks
8 blueberries
½ ounce (15 ml) agave nectar
1 ounce (30 ml) VeeV Açaí Spirit (see page 291)
¾ ounce (20 ml) pomegranate juice, such as
POM Wonderful
2 ounces (60 ml) red wine
Seasonal fruit, for garnish
Muddle the watermelon, blueberries, and agave nectar in the bottom of a bar glass. Add the VeeV, pomegranate juice, and red wine. Shake well with ice. Strain into 2 ice-filled rocks glasses and garnish with seasonal fresh fruit.
