I have worked for a long time to win honor and glory for my government and to attract the esteem of my fellow citizens, and today I am crowned with thorns and the most marked ingratitude for my compensation, and I don’t deny the mistakes I may have made and I make my excuses to you for them, but that part doesn’t deserve the [severity] of the punishment I have received or the treatment which I suffer: first Consul, it is unfortunate for me that I am not personally known to you, if you had known me to the depths while I was in Saint Domingue, you would be at peace on my account and would render me more justice; my interior is Good.
