well geared toward the doom-and-gloom aspect of the end times. Yes, they acknowledge that after destruction comes a golden era of peace and harmony, but their main focus was on the difficulties along the way.

Present-day prophets, however, focus on the spiritual opportunity of the end times. Rather than being helpless victims of the mistakes of the past, we are encouraged to be empowered creators of the future. The end times are viewed as a push toward evolutionary development. According to biologist and shaman Alberto Villoldo, there is a “great slumber across the land,” which he refers to as a “cultural trance.”

In Chapter 13, we’ll take a more skeptical look at the New Age prophets, but first, let’s see how present-day prediction works and what the general message is. In this chapter, you’ll hear views from some of the main New Age speakers.

Modern Methods of Prediction

Prediction today is seen as an extension of normal abilities. Just as we all have musical abilities or mathematical abilities, so do we all have the ability to see into different time realms. As with math and music, some people are better at it than others.

Prediction today is also influenced by quantum physics. Science doesn’t see time the same way it used to. Time in science is no longer linear but can fold back on itself, creating the possibility of time travel. Using modern technology to predict the future is more common than we know. Weather models not withstanding, technology prediction can be pretty accurate, as you’ll soon see.

Psychics

Psychics are people who receive information that cannot be obtained through everyday intellectual pursuit. They may have visions (clairvoyance), hear voices (clairaudience), or simply “know” something (gnosis). Many of them need to shift into a state of heightened awareness, often called a trance, to receive information. Biblical prophets were often said to “be struck down” or “fall into trance” before hearing the voice of God. This is also true today, although many psychics remain in normal everyday awareness when they interact with other realms.

Channelers

Channelers “channel” communications from other sources of intelligence and are separate from the information they pass on. They’re like radios: they tune in and let the program speak through them. Sometimes they are aware of what they are saying; this is a conscious channel. Sometimes they remember nothing. Edgar Cayce (see Chapter 11) is an example of a trance channel who had no conscious involvement in the information given.

In most cases, channels do not have any personal input into the information they give. The downfall of channeling is the desire the channel may have to interpret the information coming through. Interpretation lends to the bias of the person and so may decrease the spiritual accuracy.

In channeling, the source of the information is unclear. Sometimes people claim it’s the voice of god, angels, or spiritual guides. Others claim it’s the higher self, people who are dead or ascended masters, alien intelligence, or even multidimensional beings. In all cases, the source is considered to be from a realm with greater spiritual access.

Intuitives

This type of information is an example of gnosis, or simply “knowing” something. Using extensions of the ordinary senses, intuitives sense and follow energetic information the way a bloodhound follows a scent. When they connect with a piece of information, they may realize it through a combination of images, words, and an internal sense of knowing. It forces them to extend themselves and expand their consciousness. This technique is very organic and lends itself well to people who are feelers rather than thinkers. The downside of this technique is that it also lends itself to the force of imagination and being manipulated by the bias of the intuitive.

Remote Viewing (RV) Technigue

Another method for using visions to see into events of the past, present, or future is remote viewing (RV). This technique is very similar to the way the ancient Maya described traveling through the portals
